Abstract Fewer than 50 of the over 30,000 extant species of fishes have developed anatomical specializations facilitating endothermy in specific body regions. The plankton‐feeding basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus), traditionally classified as an ectotherm, was recently shown to have regionally endothermic traits such as centralized red muscle (RM ...

Detritivores need to upgrade their food to increase its nutritional value. One method is to fragment detritus promoting the colonization of nutrient‐rich microbes, which consumers then ingest along with the detritus; so‐called microbial gardening ...

Abstract Knowledge on the ecology and life‐history traits of coastal marine species is vital to inform their conservation and management, especially as their coastal habitats come under increasing threats. However, such data have never been collated for four of the five families in the suborder Syngnathoidei—the close relatives of the better‐studied ...

Abstract Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) are a long‐lived, slow‐growing deep‐sea species endemic to the Southern Hemisphere and the focus of longline fisheries managed to ensure sustainable exploitation. Managing the fisheries relies on accurate stock assessments that include pertinent biological and exploitation processes.

<p>The processes of particle aggregation and disaggregation are of paramount importance for ocean biogeochemical cycles. Particle aggregation leads to a transfer of particulate material and of their chemical constituents into large size fractions that can settle rapidly through the water column, thereby contributing to the ocean ...

Killer Whales in the Central Tropical Pacific: Occurrence, Resightings, Morphology, and Acoustics
ABSTRACT Compared to their well‐studied coastal temperate counterparts, killer whales (Orcinus orca) in tropical‐subtropical and oceanic areas are under‐documented. We used sighting, photo‐identification, and acoustic data of killer whales in the central tropical Pacific (CTP), collected from multiple platforms between 2002 and 2023, to assess their ...

Methane and microbial dynamics in the Gulf of Mexico water column
In contrast to other oligotrophic water bodies the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) hosts an abundance of hydrocarbon seeps, which likely influences the microbial assemblages it hosts particularly regarding the availability of labile carbon in the aphotic GOM.

Giant aggregates: Importance as microbial centers and agents of material flux in the mesopelagic zone [PDF]
By using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), we studied large mucous aggregates produced by the larvacean Bathochordaeus in Monterey Bay, California. These fragile structures or “houses,” cannot be sampled by typical water or net collecting devices, and likely represent a class of cosmopolitan, widely spaced aggregates in subsurface waters.
