Quantification and characterization of macro- and mesoplastic items in the water column of the river Waal [PDF]

open access: yesScience of the Total Environment, 2023
Although studies on plastic concentrations mainly focus on the marine environment, recently, an increasing number of studies point out environmental consequences in freshwater environments around the world. However, there still is a paucity of field data on the abundance of riverine plastic items, in particular in the water column.

Characterization of microplastic and mesoplastic debris in sediments from Kamilo Beach and Kahuku Beach, Hawai'i [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Pollution Bulletin, 2016
Sediment samples were collected from two Hawai'ian beaches, Kahuku Beach on O'ahu and Kamilo Beach on the Big Island of Hawai'i. A total of 48,988 large microplastic and small mesoplastic (0.5–8 mm) particles were handpicked from the samples and sorted ...

Mesoplastic contamination in the Deli River Medan: A Pre-Assessment

open access: yesIOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, 2023
Abstract Mesoplastics are plastics with a diameter between 0.5 and 2.5 cm. The purpose of this study was to characterize the properties and quantity of floating mesoplastics in the water column and at the surface. Sampling was conducted using a net with a 0.5 cm square mesh dimension at five separate places selected based on the ...

Microplastic and mesoplastic contamination in canned sardines and sprats

Science of the Total Environment, 2018
No report was found on the occurrence of microplastics in processed seafood products that are manufactured for direct human consumption. This study investigates the potential presence of micro- and mesoplastics in 20 brands of canned sardines and sprats originating from 13 countries over 4 continents followed by their chemical composition determination

Micro- and mesoplastic pollution along the coast of Peru

Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2023
Peru suffers from poor solid waste and coastal management, as well as evidenced plastic pollution in various forms. However, studies in Peru focusing on small plastic debris (i.e., meso- and microplastics) are still limited and inconclusive. Thus, the present study investigated the abundance, characteristics, seasonality, and distribution of small ...

Field management changes the distribution of mesoplastic and macroplastic in Mollisols of Northeast China

Chemosphere, 2022
Mesoplastic (MaP) and macroplastic (MeP) coming from plastic mulching tend to cause negative effects on biota in ecosystems. However, it is still not clear how field management influences the distribution of MeP/MaP in soils. In this study, MeP/MaP was investigated in 0-20 and 20-30 cm soil layers of three vegetable fields (3.4-6.5 ha) after 13 years ...

Characteristics of meso-sized plastic marine debris on 20 beaches in Korea

open access: yesMarine Pollution Bulletin, 2017
We surveyed the abundance and accumulation patterns of mesoplastic marine debris (5-25 mm) on 20 beaches in Korea. The mean abundance of it was 13.2 items/m(2), and the mean weight was 1.5 g/m(2). Hard plastic and Styrofoam were the dominant types.

Microplastic and mesoplastic pollution in farmland soils in suburbs of Shanghai, China

Environmental Pollution, 2018
Microplastics are emerging pollutants which have been extensively detected in water environments. However, little is known about microplastic pollution in soil environments. In this study, we investigated microplastics and mesoplastics in farmland soils from twenty vegetable fields around the suburbs of Shanghai.

Methodology and applications of mesoplasticity in manufacturing sciences

International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, 1993
Abstract The studies on plasticity have been conventionally divided into two categories, namely macroplasticity and microplasticity. Mesoplasticity emerges as a link between these two schools which introduces the essential microplasticity concepts to various intermediate (or meso-) scales, and represents the connection between the continuum-based ...

Selective transport of microplastics and mesoplastics by drifting in coastal waters

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2014
The quantity and size distributions of small plastic fragments in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan were investigated using field surveys and a numerical particle-tracking model. The model was used to interpret the distributions of small plastic fragments and the possible transport processes in coastal waters.
