Identification and quantification of additive-derived chemicals in beached micro–mesoplastics and macroplastics

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2023
Although marine plastic debris are expected to retain various chemical additives, little is known about the additives that are retained. We conducted a screening analysis of additives in 261 macroplastic and micro-mesoplastic debris from two beaches.

Sorption behaviors of phenanthrene, nitrobenzene, and naphthalene on mesoplastics and microplastics

Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2019
The occurrence of plastic particles in aquatic environment has led to enormous concern in the past few years. The sorption behaviors of harmful organic compounds by plastic particles can increase their concentrations by several orders of magnitude influencing their global transport in the marine environment.

Characterization of Mesoplastic on Albanian Beach

2024 IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for the Sea; Learning to Measure Sea Health Parameters (MetroSea)
Plastic waste poses substantial risks to marine species and human health. While considerable research has been conducted on microplastics (< 5 mm) and macroplastics (> 25 mm), a significant knowledge gap regarding mesoplastics (5 – 25 mm) remains. This research aims to enhance the understanding of mesoplastics and their potential environmental impact ...

Microplastics and mesoplastics in fish from coastal and fresh waters of China

Environmental Pollution, 2017
Plastic pollution is a growing global concern. In the present study, we investigated plastic pollution in 21 species of sea fish and 6 species of freshwater fish from China. All of the species were found to ingest micro- or mesoplastics. The average abundance of microplastics varied from 1.1 to 7.2 items by individual and 0.2-17.2 items by gram.

A personal reflection of mesoplasticity and its applications

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2005
Abstract A personal account is given in this paper on the development of mesoplasticity from the author's perspectives and that of his research group. Why am I interested? What is mesoplasticity? What kind of problems could be solved? How did I solve them? What are the joys and delights coming from all this research?

Differentiating macroplastic and mesoplastic pollution on relatively clean beaches of central Philippines

Marine Environmental Research
Marine plastic litter exposed to different environmental conditions have the tendency to break and produce smaller plastic debris that threatens marine organism, tourism, livelihood, and health. However, our understanding on the distribution of different sizes of marine plastic litter in marine environments is still limited.

Microplastic and mesoplastic pollution in surface waters and beaches of the Canary Islands: A review

open access: yesMarine Pollution Bulletin
The Canary Archipelago is a group of volcanic islands located in the North Atlantic Ocean with high marine biodiversity. This archipelago intercepts the Canary Current, the easternmost branch of the Azores Current in the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre, which brings large amounts of litter from remote sources via oceanic transportation.

Factors that influence the migration of sorbed pesticides in polyethylene and biodegradable mesoplastics

Environmental Pollution
Trifluralin, Chlorpyrifos, and Procymidone migration performance from polyethylene (PE) and biodegradable (Mater-Bi: M-B) mulching films was examined. Desorption of pesticides from PE and M-B was studied using soil-plastic microcosms, considering temperature, soil humidity, and mulching film type as experimental variables.

Methodological Assessment of Macro- and Mesoplastics Pollution in Rivers

Globally, plastic pollution in aquatic environments has been considered one of the major contemporary environmental challenges. Even though environmental effects associated with plastic pollution have been largely known, research on plastic concentrations mainly focuses on the marine environment.
