Imprint of Southern Ocean mesoscale eddies on chlorophyll [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2018
Although mesoscale ocean eddies are ubiquitous in the Southern Ocean, their average regional and seasonal association with phytoplankton has not been quantified systematically yet.

Quantifying Eulerian Eddy Leakiness in an Idealized Model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
An idealized eddy‐resolving ocean basin, closely resembling the North Pacific Ocean, is simulated using MITgcm. We identify rotationally coherent Lagrangian vortices (RCLVs) and sea surface height (SSH) eddies based on the Lagrangian and Eulerian ...

Leaking method approach to surface transport in the Mediterranean Sea from a numerical ocean model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We use Lagrangian diagnostics (the leaking and the exchange methods) to characterize surface transport out of and between selected regions in the Western Mediterranean. Velocity fields are obtained from a numerical model.

Assessing the role of urban blue space in summer outdoor thermal regulation in northwestern Europe: A hectometric Weather Research and Forecasting modelling on idealized urban landscape

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Using hectometric Weather Research and Forecasting simulations, we examine how urban blue spaces mitigate extreme summer heat in northwestern European cities through neighbourhood‐scale cooling mechanisms. Results show horizontal advection dominates cooling by mixing cooler air from waterbodies with warmer urban air, providing ∼50W·m−2$$ \sim 50\kern0 ...

Implementation of the LANS-alpha turbulence model in a primitive equation ocean model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
This paper presents the first numerical implementation and tests of the Lagrangian-averaged Navier-Stokes-alpha (LANS-alpha) turbulence model in a primitive equation ocean model.

Performance evaluation of regional weather predictions with the Model for Prediction Across Scales – Atmosphere (MPAS‐A) over the Maritime Continent

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
As part of the ongoing efforts to develop next‐generation forecasting systems at the Meteorological Service Singapore, this study presents the setup and evaluation of the SINGV_NG(MPAS) system. Overall, the SINGV_NG(MPAS) system outperforms European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) deterministic forecasts in capturing heavy rainfall ...

Toward Exploring Topographic Effects on Evolution and Propagation of Ocean Mesoscale Eddies Through Life Cycle Across Izu-Ogasawara Ridge in Northwestern Pacific Ocean

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
Ocean mesoscale eddies contribute significantly to water transport on a global scale, constituting the ubiquitous, irregular, discrete, nonlinear components.

Eddy Impacts on the Florida Current

open access: yes, 2013
The Gulf Stream in the Atlantic carries warm water northwards and forms both the return closure of the subtropical gyre as well as the upper limb of the meridional overturning circulation.

Observed Characteristics and Vertical Structure of Mesoscale Eddies in the Southwest Tropical Pacific [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In the Southwest Pacific Ocean, waters transit from the subtropical gyre before being redistributed equatorward and poleward. While the mean pathways are known, the contribution to the mixing and transport of the water from mesoscale eddies has not been ...

SATELLITE PICTURES OF MESOSCALE EDDIES

open access: yesMonthly Weather Review, 1962
Abstract Satellite photographs of horizontal eddy patterns are presented and the conditions associated with their formation are discussed. It is shown that some map be purely mechnnical eddies produced by an obstacle (islands) in the flow, others may be the result of inertial oscillation, and others may be produced by inertial instability.
