Influence of primary tumour and patient factors on survival in patients undergoing curative resection and treatment for liver metastases from colorectal cancer. [PDF]

open access: yesBJS Open, 2020
Prognostic factors for the primary colorectal tumour also affect the outcome after surgery for liver metastases. Although performance status and complications after primary resection also influence outcome after liver resection, other factors such as older age and female sex do not, but these patients are still underrepresented in the liver surgical ...

Factors associated with metachronous metastases and survival in locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 1172-1179, December 2020., 2020
Surgery for locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer can achieve good survival outcomes. Some histopathological features significantly increase the number of metachronous metastases and shorten survival. Presentation with a synchronous metastasis that is treated successfully significantly increases the number of metachronous metastases and shortens

Impact of anastomotic leak on long‐term survival in patients undergoing gastrectomy for gastric cancer

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), Volume 107, Issue 12, Page 1648-1658, November 2020., 2020
This study demonstrates that anastomotic leakage leads to prolonged critical care and in‐hospital stay, and is associated with compromised long‐term overall survival. Future research should aim at developing mechanisms and interventions to reduce the risk of anastomotic leaks. Leaks impair outcomes Background The impact of anastomotic leak (AL) on long‐

Machine learning to predict early recurrence after oesophageal cancer surgery

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), Volume 107, Issue 8, Page 1042-1052, July 2020., 2020
Early recurrence after surgery for adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus is common. A risk prediction model was derived using modern machine learning methods that accurately predicts risk of early recurrence using postoperative pathology. Machine learning may help Background Early cancer recurrence after oesophagectomy is a common problem, with an incidence

Effect of high ligation on survival of patients undergoing surgery for primary colorectal cancer and synchronous liver metastases

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 3, Page 508-515, June 2020., 2020
Although R0 surgery is recommended for stage IV colorectal cancer, the degree of lymphadenectomy required has not been established. A multi‐institutional retrospective analysis was done of patients with colorectal cancer and synchronous hepatic metastases who were treated with R0 surgery.

Total tumour volume as a prognostic factor in patients with resectable colorectal cancer liver metastases

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 3, Page 456-466, June 2020., 2020
This study investigated whether the total tumour volume (TTV) of colorectal liver metastases could predict patient survival after hepatic resection. Associations were identified between TTV and recurrence‐free survival, overall survival and unresectable recurrence after primary hepatic resection.

Overall risk and risk factors for metachronous peritoneal metastasis after colorectal cancer surgery: a nationwide cohort study

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 2, Page 284-292, April 2020., 2020
In a register‐based study of 22 586 Danish patients with colorectal cancer who had intended curative surgery, a low incidence of metachronous peritoneal metastasis (M‐PM) was found. Risk factors for M‐PM were advanced T and N status and right‐sided colonic tumour.
