Functional Disorder at the Neural Interface: How Disordered Nanostructures Promote Proper Growth and Differentiation in In Vitro Neural Cultures

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work provides a practical guide for neuroengineers to design advanced neural interfaces, embracing and tailoring the concept of functional disorder. By bridging 2D and 3D in vitro models, this work highlights how non‐periodic, spatially heterogeneous, multiscale nanotopography can enable more physiologically relevant platforms for studying neural ...

Thermochemical Micro‐Explosion for Prompt Thrombolysis via Proximal Injection of Liquid Alkali Metal

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We report a micro‐explosive thermochemical thrombolysis (METCT) therapy via injectable liquid alkali metal encapsulated in dimethyl silicone (LAM@oil). METCT enables prompt and safe vascular recanalization within 90 s. Critically, the LAM@oil system demonstrates significantly higher thrombolytic efficacy compared to clinically available thrombolytic ...

An Embodied Paper‐Based Microfluidic Al‐Air Battery for Enduring Untethered Insect‐Scale Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work presents a centimeter‐scale microfluidic aluminum–air battery (MFAAB) with dual‐surface anode and F−‐mediated byproduct decomposition. The design enables a high capacity of 2697.05 mAh/g Al and delivers tens of milliwatts to power LEDs, motors, and a toy car.

The metabolic cost of fever

Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, 1987
Indirect calorimetry has been employed to demonstrate that fever and infection result in increased metabolic heat production. This response contributes, with reduced dietary energy intake, to negative energy balance in the infected host and constitutes a metabolic "cost".

THE METABOLIC COST OF HATHA YOGA

Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2005
To determine the metabolic and heart rate (HR) responses of hatha yoga, 26 women (19-40 years old) performed a 30-minute hatha yoga routine of supine lying, sitting, and standing asanas (i.e., postures). Subjects followed identical videotaped sequences of hatha yoga asanas.

The metabolic cost of birdsong production

Journal of Experimental Biology, 2001
SUMMARY The metabolic cost of birdsong production has not been studied in detail but is of importance in our understanding of how selective pressures shape song behavior. We measured rates of oxygen consumption during song in three songbird species, zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), Waterslager canaries (Serinus canaria) and European ...
