Metabolic cost of head-stand posture

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1962
Metabolic cost to the human body of various postures has been assessed by many workers. The cost with the body in the topsy-turvy posture, or while “standing on the head,” has not been reported so far. Energy expenditure was calculated indirectly by estimating the amount of oxygen consumed while in a particular posture.

Metabolic Cost of Stair Climbing

Proceedings of the Human Factors Society Annual Meeting, 1986
Metabolic energy costs were determined on sixteen male firefighters ascending a stairmill in an unladen and a laden condition at a vertical velocity of 12.2 m/min. In the unladen condition they wore shorts and tennis shoes, while lagen they wore full protective clothing, including a SCBA, and carried a hose pack.

Comparing the metabolic costs of flight

2005
Abstract The data set accumulated in Chapter 8 represents the tremendous amount of effort of many investigators to measure flight costs directly. This deserves further exploitation. Comparison of the best measurements available over a wide range of species should reveal general trends in bird flight costs if there are any.
