Metabolic Cost of Stair Climbing

Proceedings of the Human Factors Society Annual Meeting, 1986
Metabolic energy costs were determined on sixteen male firefighters ascending a stairmill in an unladen and a laden condition at a vertical velocity of 12.2 m/min. In the unladen condition they wore shorts and tennis shoes, while lagen they wore full protective clothing, including a SCBA, and carried a hose pack.

Autonomous exoskeleton reduces metabolic cost of walking

2014 36th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2014
We developed an autonomous powered leg exoskeleton capable of providing large amounts of positive mechanical power to the wearer during powered plantarflexion phase of walking. The autonomous exoskeleton consisted of a winch actuator fasted to the shin which pulled on fiberglass struts attached to a boot.

Metabolic cost of walking: equation and model

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1986
Twenty years of published experience with the Workman-Armstrong equation for predicting walking VO2 is reviewed. The equation is reexpressed in currently accepted terminology, and it is shown that the equation serves well as a basic model of normal walking.

A Theory of Metabolic Costs for Bipedal Gaits

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1997
A simple model predicts the energy cost of bipedal locomotion for given speed, stride length, duty factor and shape factor. (The duty factor is the fraction of stride duration, for which a foot is on the ground, and the shape factor describes the pattern of force exerted on the ground).

Metabolic cost of handcycling

2012
Nowadays, race handbikes are built with lightweight materials and usually present an aerodynamic user-interface property. These features markedly affect the propulsion techniques, mechanical loading, mechanical efficiency and thus the metabolic cost (C).

The Metabolic Cost of Lower Extremity Amputation

Clinics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, 1997
Amputation surgery should be approached as the first step in the rehabilitation of a patient with a non-functioning, salvageable limb. Before performing amputation surgery, the rehabilitation team should have an understanding of outcome expectations for the individual patient. Biologic joints are energy couples. When performing amputation surgery, more
