To the Editor:— During the past 17 years we have done several thousand pulmonary function studies by spirometric methods and with these we have obtained as many determinations of the basal metabolic rate. Again and again we have noticed the tendency of the basal metabolic rate to be low when calculated by the "accepted" standards.

Metabolic Rate and Feeding Behaviora
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1989According to the ischymetric hypothesis, hunger is induced by the decrease of overall metabolic rate. In order to assess such a mechanism, it was necessary to monitor the muscular contraction-free metabolic rate designated "métabolisme de fond" (MF) in rats that were either resting or moving.

Understanding variation in metabolic rate
Journal of Experimental Biology, 2018ABSTRACTMetabolic rate reflects an organism's capacity for growth, maintenance and reproduction, and is likely to be a target of selection. Physiologists have long sought to understand the causes and consequences of within-individual to among-species variation in metabolic rates – how metabolic rates relate to performance and how they should evolve ...

Resting metabolic rate in obesity
Postgraduate Medical JournalAbstract The prevalence of obesity has continued to rise, and obesity and its attendant metabolic disorders are major global health threat factors. Among the current interventions for obesity, none have demonstrated sustained efficacy in achieving long-term outcomes.
