Nature of the mammalian ciliary metachronal wave
Journal of Applied Physiology, 1993The temporal and spatial coordination of ciliary beat (metachronicity) is fundamental to effective mucociliary transport. Metachronal wave period (MWP) and ciliary beat frequency (CBF) of fresh excised sheep and canine tracheal epithelial tissues were measured with the use of a newly developed alternating focal spot laser light scattering system.

Synchronization, phase locking, and metachronal wave formation in ciliary chains
Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2008Synchronization and wave formation in one-dimensional ciliary arrays are studied analytically and numerically. We develop a simple model for ciliary motion that is complex enough to describe well the behavior of beating cilia but simple enough to study collective effects analytically.
