Reconstitution of Metachronal Waves in Ciliated Cortical Sheets of Paramecium: I. Wave Stabilities
Journal of Experimental Biology, 1994ABSTRACT We reconstituted metachronal waves on ciliated cortical sheets prepared from detergent-extracted Paramecium multimicronucleatum cells. Ciliary movements of the cortical sheet, whose intracellular side adhered to a glass coverslip, were reactivated by perfusion of a basic reactivation medium containing ATP. In this condition, the

Direct measurement of directional disorder for ciliary metachronal wave
2001 Conference Proceedings of the 23rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2005The interrelationship of cilia and the directional disorder of the ciliary metachronal wave were analyzed using digital microscopic images. The degree of synchronization between ciliary beats was determined by the correlation. factor between two different spots. Principal axes of inertia were applied to find out the uniphase directions of beating cilia.

Characterization of metachronal wave in beating cilia: Distribution of phases in space
Biorheology, 1989We have examined phase differences between beating cilia measured in different directions on the surface. The measurements were performed on tissue cultures taken from frog palate epithelium. This experiment was based on a method developed earlier, which measures simultaneously scattered light from two different and relatively small areas.

Direct measurement of the velocity of the metachronal wave in beating cilia
Biorheology, 1987Recently a computerized electro-optical method was developed which enables one to simultaneously measure the frequency and the wavelength of the metachronal waves in beating cilia. The method is based on measurement of scattered light from two areas at a given distance apart.

Ciliary metachronal wave propagation on the compliant surface of Paramecium cells
Cytoskeleton, 2015Ciliary movements in protozoa exhibit metachronal wave‐like coordination, in which a constant phase difference is maintained between adjacent cilia. It is at present generally thought that metachronal waves require hydrodynamic coupling between adjacent cilia and the extracellular fluid.

The spermatozeugmata of Tubifex tubifex are bundles of spermatozoa, stored in the sperma thecae and composed of two types of sperm cell s. The eupyrene, fertilizing , spermatozoa are stored parallel to the centrai axial cylinder, whereas the oligopyrene spermatozoa are helically arranged in the cortex. The main portions of their tails are connected by

Dynamics of a magnetically rotated micro swimmer inspired by paramecium metachronal wave
Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology, 2019In the past few years, a significant body of research has been devoted to designing magnetic micron scale robotic systems for minimally invasive medicine. The motion of different microorganisms is the nature's solution for efficient propulsion of these swimmers.

Development of Micro Pump Using Magnetic Artificial Cilia with Metachronal Wave
2020 IEEE 33rd International Conference on Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS), 2020Our study aims to realize artificial cilia with metachronal wave and to apply them to a micro pump. Metachronal wave is a typical motion observed in natural cilia motion of living organisms. To clarify the characteristics of fluid transport by metachronal waves, we fabricated two modes of artificial cilia that form symplectic and antiplectic ...

Modeling of a propulsion mechanism for swimming microrobots inspired by ciliate metachronal waves
2012 4th IEEE RAS & EMBS International Conference on Biomedical Robotics and Biomechatronics (BioRob), 2012The envisioned applications of microrobots in bodily fluids have raised the demand for effectively swimming microdevices. Microorganisms have become a source of inspiration because their mechanisms of propulsion are effective at low-Re. We investigated the theoretical performance of swimming microrobots implementing propulsion inspired by metachronal ...
