Phylogenomic and Pangenomic Assessment of a Mediterranean Strain of Raphidiopsis raciborskii Extends Knowledge of the Global Distribution and Characteristics of a Potentially Toxigenic Cyanobacterium

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 3, June 2025.
The potentially toxigenic cyanobacterium Raphidiopsis raciborskii has spread to temperate regions and produces massive blooms. This study reports the first taxonomic and functional metagenomic assessment of a strain from the Mediterranean, thus filling a significant gap in global distribution.

Nitrosarchaeum haohaiensis sp. Nov. CL1T: Isolation and Characterisation of a Novel Ammonia‐Oxidising Archaeon From Aquatic Environments

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 3, June 2025.
Following a 3.5‐year enrichment cultivation period, a rapid‐growing ammonia‐oxidising archaeon, designated CL1T, was isolated from the East China Sea. Strain CL1T represents a new species within the Nitrosarchaeum genus and is capable of effectively oxidising ammonia at both low and high concentrations through the GS‐GOGAT and GDH pathways. Furthermore,

Enhancing Biodiversity‐Function Relationships in Field Retting: Towards Key Microbial Indicators for Retting Control

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 3, June 2025.
This study investigates the temporal dynamics of bacterial and fungal communities involved in hemp field retting. Using high‐throughput sequencing, this study identified key bacterial and fungal phyla in hemp stems and soil samples, including Proteobacteria, Ascomycota, and newly discovered phyla.

Evolutionary Convergence of Nutritional Symbionts in Ticks

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 3, June 2025.
Confocal imaging of nutritional symbionts in the ovaries of ticks using fluorescence in situ hybridisation. ABSTRACT Symbiosis with bacteria is essential for the survival of animals with an obligate blood‐feeding lifestyle. In ticks, two distinct bacterial lineages, Coxiella‐like and Francisella‐like endosymbionts, have independently evolved into ...
