The essential role of large research vessels in marine ecosystem observations and ocean sustainability

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, EarlyView.
Abstract Our understanding of marine ecosystems and ability to manage them sustainably has come from multidisciplinary observations made repeatedly over long periods of time. These long‐term ecosystem observations depend on the capabilities of large research vessels, which play an essential role in the collection of global ocean observations.

Nitrous oxide turnover in the suboxic zone of the Black Sea

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, EarlyView.
Abstract The Black Sea is the largest meromictic marine basin characterized by well‐oxygenated surface waters and a deep sulfidic anoxic core, separated by a ca. 50‐m‐thick suboxic zone. Nitrogen cycling at oxic‐anoxic boundaries of oxygen‐depleted marine environments has been identified as a major source of nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas.

Large, double‐stranded DNA viruses tend to suppress phytoplankton populations more effectively than small viruses of diverse genome type

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, EarlyView.
Abstract Viruses infecting aquatic microbes vary immensely in size, but the ecological consequences of virus size are poorly understood. Here we used a unique suite of diverse phytoplankton strains and their viruses, all isolated from waters around Hawai'i, to assess whether virus size affects the suppression of host populations.
