Ca2+‐mediated response to DMSO was investigated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells expressing Ca2+‐dependent aequorin. Cell exposure to DMSO induced a cytosolic Ca2+ wave dependent on the integrity of the Cch1/Mid1 channel. Deletion of KCS1 or VIP1 genes encoding the phosphoinositol pyrophosphate (PP‐IP) synthases suppressed the DMSO‐induced Ca2 ...

A novel method for tracking structural changes in gels using widely accessible microcomputed tomography is presented and validated for various hydro‐, alco‐, and aerogels. The core idea of the method is to track positions of micrometer‐sized tracer particles entrapped in the gel and relate them to the density of the gel network.

Gas phase atomic metals in the circumstellar envelope of IRC+10216 [PDF]
We report the results of a search for gas phase atomic metals in the circumstellar envelope of the AGB carbon star IRC+10216. The search was made using high resolution (R=50000) optical absorption spectroscopy of a backgound star that probes the envelope on a line of sight 35" from the center.

Remarks on metallic warped product manifolds [PDF]
We characterize the metallic structure on the product of two metallic manifolds in terms of metallic maps and provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the warped product of two locally metallic Riemannian manifolds to be locally metallic. The particular case of product manifolds is discussed and an example of metallic warped product Riemannian ...

Revisiting Metallicity of Long Duration Gamma-Ray Burst Host Galaxies: The Role of Chemical Inhomogeneity within Galaxies [PDF]
We predict the metallicity probability distribution function (PDF) of long gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies at low-redshifts ($z \la 0.3$) when GRBs occur only in low-metallicity environment, assuming empirical formulations of galaxy properties. We discuss contribution of high-metallicity galaxies to the cosmic rate of low-metallicity GRBs, taking ...

Resolving scientific controversy over smelter risks and neurodegenerative effects of metals
Although it is well known that metals pollution can cause neurotoxic effects, scientists are currently divided about the neurodegeneration hypothesis. That is, some scientists accept, while others fail to accept, the hypothesis that metals/metalloids, at

Evaluation of the properties of plastic-metal interfaces directly bonded via injection molding
Plastic and metal can be directly bonded via insert injection molding by creating surface porous structures with 30–50 nm sizes on metal surface. Molten polymers can be penetrated into the small pores created on metal surface in the short molding process,

Metals have always fascinated humans, for reasons ranging from practical through aesthetic to philosophical considerations. More than for other materials, this fascination can be seen to cover both the production of metals and their use. In most societies ceramics play a much more fundamental and ubiquitous role than metals, but it is only the high-end

Method for forming hermetic seals [PDF]
The firmly adherent film of bondable metal, such as silver, is applied to the surface of glass or other substrate by decomposing a layer of solution of a thermally decomposable metallo-organic deposition (MOD) compound such as silver neodecanoate in ...
