The modeling of metal-oxide surge arrester applied to improve surge protection

2009 2nd International Conference on Power Electronics and Intelligent Transportation System (PEITS), 2009
Metal-oxide surge arresters have dynamic characteristics which are significant for overvoltage coordination studies involving the fast front surges.

Comments on metal oxide surge arresters surges energy absorption capacity

Conference Record of the 1996 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation, 2002
This paper presents an approach to determine the energy absorption capacity of metal oxide surge arrester resistors. The proposed approach deals with the discharge current peak versus discharge current time relation. A testing method and a statistical evaluation are proposed.

Applying metal-oxide surge arresters on distribution systems

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1989
The primary advantages of a metal-oxide surge arrester over a silicon-carbide surge arrester are identified as the extreme nonlinearity (flatness) of the metal-oxide voltage versus current characteristic and the elimination of the requirement for a series gap and its associated gap sparkover voltage.

Thermal Properties of Metal Oxide Surge Arresters

IEEE Power Engineering Review, 1983
The thermal properties of metal oxide surge arresters have been represented as a simple analog og model. This model can be used for steady-state and transient simulation of arrester performance in field or laboratory conditions. Model parameters can be determined analytically from physical dimensions of a particular arrester unit or derived by ...

Electrothermal model for complete metal-oxide surge arresters

IEE Proceedings - Generation, Transmission and Distribution, 2001
A computational, electrothermal model for a complete metal-oxide surge arrester based on the implicit form of the finite-differences method is presented. The model is used to calculate the cooling curve after the application of overvoltages and the temperature variations during standard test.

Search for new diagnostics for metal oxide surge arrester

Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Properties and Applications of Dielectric Materials (Cat. No.00CH36347), 2002
A new diagnostic technique called “return voltage measurement” is investigated to assess its effectiveness for monitoring degradation in metal oxide blocks. The return voltage measurement was conducted on a number of distribution class zinc-oxide arresters. The findings from these measurements are described in this paper.

Bibliography of metal oxide surge arresters, 1990-1992

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1995
This is the second and continuation of the metal oxide surge arresters bibliography first published in IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, vol. 8, no. 3, p.1000-34, 1991. This listing covers publications from 1990-1992. Some changes were made in this compilation. Publications on basic disk chemistry are not included.

Influence of pollution on the performance of metal oxide surge arresters

IEEE CCECE2002. Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering. Conference Proceedings (Cat. No.02CH37373), 2003
Surge arresters are used as key equipment to protect costly substation and transmission line equipment against atmospheric as well as switching over voltages. Reliability of surge arresters has been the subject matter of many studies. Elimination of series gaps in metal oxide surge arresters (MOSA) avoids variation in protective levels caused by ...

A new monitoring system for metal oxide surge arresters

11th International Symposium on High-Voltage Engineering (ISH 99), 1999
For on-line monitoring of MO-surge arresters a system has been developed, that monitors and evaluates the performance characteristics of surge arresters. During normal operation without surge events, the peak values of the leakage currents and line voltages as well as the ambient temperature are measured and stored in periodic time intervals. In larger
