Comparative analysis of nonbismuth metal oxide varistor compositions and performance characteristics

open access: yesDiscover Electronics
The persistent reliance on conventional ZnO–Bi₂O₃ varistor systems has increasingly revealed fundamental limitations that constrain their deployment in modern power infrastructure, particularly concerning thermal volatilization, environmental ...

dv/dt Dependence in metal oxide varistors

open access: yesElectronics Letters, 1986
A dv/dt dependence has been observed in metal oxide varis-tors during impulse testing. A lossy dielectric model which provides a qualitative explanation of this behaviour can also be used to account for current overshoot.

Strain‐Induced Redistribution of Point Defects in ZnO Nanoparticles

open access: yesSmall Science, Volume 6, Issue 3, March 2026.
Powder compaction generates local strain effects in ZnO nanoparticles. This alters the abundance of intrinsic point defects and impacts the semiconductor's electronic structure. Such changes were analyzed by a combination of spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations and emphasize the importance of strain effects in the design and ...

Electro-Thermal Modeling of Metal-Oxide Arrester under Power Frequency Applied Voltages

open access: yesEnergies, 2018
Metal-oxide arresters (MOAs) are used to absorb the electrical energy resulting from overvoltages in power systems. However, temperature rises caused by the absorbed energy can lead to the electrothermal failure of MOAs.

Ultra‐Rapid Blacklight Sintering for ZnO‐Based Varistors With Optimized Functional Properties

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, Volume 109, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT The increasing demand for energy‐efficient optoelectronic systems has intensified interest in high‐performance ceramic varistors, which are critical components in surge protection applications. In this study, ZnO‐based varistors were fabricated using a novel blacklight sintering (BLS) technique, which employs high‐powered blue light, and were ...

Electrical Properties of ZnO-Bi2O3 Metal Oxide Heterojunction — A Clue of a Role of Intergranular Layers in ZnO Varistors

open access: yes, 1981
Zinc Oxide (ZnO) Ceramics-Bismuth Oxide (Bi2O3) Metal Oxide thin film heterojunction made by sputtering technique showed a highly non-Ohmic property. The voltage-current characteristics and the dielectric properties showed dependence on Bi2O3 metal oxide

Grain Boundary Space Charge Engineering of Solid Oxide Electrolytes: Model Thin Film Study

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 36, Issue 14, 16 February 2026.
This study demonstrates unprecedented control of grain boundary electrical properties in solid electrolytes. Selective diffusion of cations through grain boundaries in thin films enables 12 orders of magnitude variation in ionic resistance, proving that systematic chemical modification of grain boundary electrical properties is feasible.

A novel embedded voltage‐clamped circuit for multilevel modular converters submodule to suppress very fast transient overvoltage

open access: yesHigh Voltage
The submodule in multilevel modular converters experiences a very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO) during switch operation of gas‐insulated switchgear, which also results in overvoltage on power devices, such as thyristors and insulated gate bipolar ...
