Commercial metal oxide varistor (MOV) devices provide a combination of high voltage, peak current, pulse energy absorption, and fast response speed. The non-uniformity and defects, however, may lead to relatively low voltage and energy dissipation, high leakage, low reliability and mechanical cracking.

Long-time polarization currents in metal-oxide varistors

The low-frequency (100–10−4 Hz) behavior of metal-oxide varistors is obtained from analysis of the charging and discharging currents which flow upon the application and removal of a step voltage. These results are compared to data for the complex dielectric constant ε=ε′−iε″ obtained using an ac bridge in the frequency range 101–10−1 Hz.

A new component - the metal oxide varistor suppressor

The paper deals with the novel aspects of a newly developed transient voltage suppressor. Details of its operation, fabrication and characterization are given. Its performance is compared against the more familiar devices currently used for transient voltage protection including devices such as spark gaps, zeners and selenium suppressors.

Anomalous retardation of the sintering kinetics of ZnO with addition of Bi[sub 4]Ti[sub 3]O[sub 12] (BIT) and a low voltage varistor composition containing ZnO, BIT, Co[sub 3]O[sub 4] and Mn[sub 2]O[sub 3] in the temperature interval between 780 and 850 C was investigated.
