A new component - the metal oxide varistor suppressor
1972 IEEE Power Processing and Electronics Specialists Conference, 1972The paper deals with the novel aspects of a newly developed transient voltage suppressor. Details of its operation, fabrication and characterization are given. Its performance is compared against the more familiar devices currently used for transient voltage protection including devices such as spark gaps, zeners and selenium suppressors.

Simple Model of Metal Oxide Varistor for Pspice Simulation
IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems, 2004Metal oxide varistors (MOVs) are commonly used to suppress transients in many applications, such as industrial process measurement and control instrumentation, when exposed to electromagnetic interference. Varistors symmetrical, sharp breakdown characteristics enable them to provide transient suppression performance.

Grain Resistivity and Conduction in Metal Oxide Varistors
1986Metal oxide varistors are ceramic devices with highly nonlinear current-voltage characteristics similar to back-to-back Zener diodes.1−4 Typical I-V characteristics for a metal oxide varistor at 77 K and for a small range of temperatures near 300 K are shown in Fig. 1. They are produced by sintering ZnO powder together with small amounts (1 to 10 mole %
