In vitro thermodynamic dissection of human copper transfer from chaperone to target protein. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Transient protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions are fundamental components of biological activity. To understand biological activity, not only the structures of the involved proteins are important but also the energetics of the individual steps

Insulation accelerates rate of cooling with cryogenic fluid [PDF]

open access: yes, 1965
Thermal insulating material increases the rate of heat transfer from the interior of a chamber to a liquid nitrogen-filled metal jacket.

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Does the Dirac Cone Exist in Silicene on Metal Substrates?

open access: yes, 2014
Absence of the Dirac cone due to a strong band hybridization is revealed to be a common feature for epitaxial silicene on metal substrates according to our first-principles calculations for silicene on Ir, Cu, Mg, Au, Pt, Al, and Ag substrates.

Iron homeostasis disruption and lipid peroxidation in skeletal muscle during short‐term immobilization

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
14‐day casting‐induced immobilization reduced gastrocnemius muscle mass and increased non‐heme iron and ferritin heavy chain levels. Despite iron accumulation, transferrin receptor 1 and iron regulatory protein 2 were paradoxically upregulated. Lipid peroxidation was elevated without compensatory antioxidant responses.

Constrained-DFT method for accurate energy level alignment of metal/molecule interfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We present a computational scheme for extracting the energy level alignment of a metal/molecule interface, based on constrained density functional theory and local exchange and correlation functionals.

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Liquid-metal heat transfer in a cocurrent- flow, double-pipe heat exchanger is investigated [PDF]

open access: yes, 1969
Analysis of liquid-metal heat transfer in cocurrent-flow, double-pipe heat exchangers shows that heat-transfer coefficients depend upon the operating conditions of the heat exchanger and that use of the customary design equation to predict heat-exchanger
