Insufficiency of Thyroid Hormone in Frog Metamorphosis and the Role of Glucocorticoids

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2019
Thyroid hormone (TH) is the most important hormone in frog metamorphosis, a developmental process which will not occur in the absence of TH but can be induced precociously by exogenous TH.

Atomic Layer Deposition Processes: Versatile Platforms for Engineering ZnO‐Chitosan Biointerfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Vapour phase metalation (VPM), multiplied pulsed vapour phase infiltration (MPI), and O2 plasma‑enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) tailor Zn–chitosan (Zn‑CS) films. PEALD improves wettability and biocompatibility. MPI enhances semiconductor behavior. Antiseptic selectivity: VPM → E. coli; MPI → H. pylori.

The idea of metamorphosis in some English Renaissance writers

open access: yes, 1981
This thesis explores the use made by Lyly, Spenser, Chapman and Marston of the idea of metamorphosis, with a brief epilogue on Jonson. The two preliminary chapters define certain important contexts for the theme of metamorphosis in this period. Chapter I

Compensatory responses to food limitation at metamorphosis in a marine invertebrate: is there temperature modulation? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Under climate change, increased temperatures combined with food limitation may be critical for species with complex life cycles, if high growth rates characterise the larval development.

Functional Analysis of Ligand‐Gated Chloride Channels in a Cnidarian Sheds Light on the Evolution of Inhibitory Signaling

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We uncover a large variety of putative inhibitory ligand‐gated ion channels (LGICs) in the phylum Cnidaria, the sister group to all bilaterian animals. Phylogenetic analysis suggests a complex evolutionary history of inhibitory LGICs with diverse neurotransmitter ligands.

Stimulatory and inhibitory G-protein signaling relays drive cAMP accumulation for timely metamorphosis in the chordate Ciona

open access: yeseLife
Larvae of the ascidian Ciona initiate metamorphosis tens of minutes after adhesion to a substratum via their adhesive organ. The gap between adhesion and metamorphosis initiation is suggested to ensure the rigidity of adhesion, allowing Ciona to maintain

“Man with a Capital M”? Lenin’s Image and Its Metamorphoses in Gorky’s Work [PDF]

open access: yesStudia Litterarum, 2019
The article discusses repeated attempts of Maxim Gorky to embody the image of the leader of the Russian revolution, Vladimir Ulyanov-Lenin in the verbal form, in the period from 1920 to 1930.

The Metamorphosis of Flowers [PDF]

open access: yesThe Plant Cell, 1993
One of the unifying theories of plant biology is that the variety of plant forms are simply different modifications of a common growth plan. Different permutations of a few key features of plant growth can generate a bewildering array of seemingly distinct forms.

A contractile injection system stimulates tubeworm metamorphosis by translocating a proteinaceous effector

open access: yeseLife, 2019
The swimming larvae of many marine animals identify a location on the sea floor to undergo metamorphosis based on the presence of specific bacteria. Although this microbe–animal interaction is critical for the life cycles of diverse marine animals, what ...

Buried Unstrained Germanium Channels: A Lattice‐Matched Platform for Quantum Technology

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Strained germanium (ε$\varepsilon$‐Ge) and strained silicon (ε$\varepsilon$‐Si) buried quantum wells have enabled advanced spin‐qubit quantum processors. However, in the absence of suitable lattice‐matched substrates, ε$\varepsilon$‐Ge and ε$\varepsilon$‐Si are deposited on defective, metamorphic SiGe buffers, which may impact device ...
