Metazoan parasites and resource heterogeneity: constraints and benefits

International Journal for Parasitology, 2000
The usually narrow specificity of parasites still represents a puzzling question. We suggest that specialisation provokes aggregation of individuals at three levels (host species, hosts individuals, host microhabitats) and that one benefit for metazoan parasites lies in the frequency of genetic exchanges, in agreement with Rohde's hypothesis.

THE OLDEST-KNOWN METAZOAN PARASITE?

Journal of Paleontology, 2004
specimen of the micromorphic fossil lingulate (organ-ophosphatic-shelled) brachiopod Linnarssonia constans Ko-neva, 1983 from the late Lower Cambrian Shabakty Group of theMalyi Karatau Range in Kazakhstan, Central Asia, preserves evi-dence of infestation within the mantle cavity by a vermiform ani-mal, leading to the growth of an internal tubular ...

Technological advances and genomics in metazoan parasites

International Journal for Parasitology, 2004
Molecular biology has provided the means to identify parasite proteins, to define their function, patterns of expression and the means to produce them in quantity for subsequent functional analyses. Whole genome and expressed sequence tag programmes, and the parallel development of powerful bioinformatics tools, allow the execution of genome-wide ...

What can metazoan parasites reveal about the taxonomy of Scomber japonicus Houttuyn in the coast of South America and Madeira Islands? [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, 2008
The metazoan parasites of four populations of the chub mackerel Scomber japonicus were analysed from two localities in the Atlantic Ocean (Madeira Islands, Portugal, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and two localities in the Pacific Ocean (Callao, Peru, and ...

Metazoan parasites of Mexican amphibians and reptiles

Zootaxa, 2008
Based on published records and original data, we present a checklist of metazoan parasites of Mexican amphibians and reptiles. This checklist includes information for 430 nominal taxa of metazoan parasites, 371 helminths (137 trematodes, 10 monogeneans, 29 cestodes, 14 acanthocephalans, 173 nematodes, and 8 hirudineans), 51 acari and 8 crustaceans.

The Mechanism of Immunity to Metazoan Parasites

The American Journal of Tropical Medicine, 1940
For over a quarter of a century students interested in immunological studies on the larger animal parasites devoted their attention to various immunological and serological tests that could be used in diagnosis or that could be used in elucidating systematic and immunological relationships. As you know, these studies have yielded many interesting facts

Patterns in metazoan parasite communities of some oyster species

Journal of Helminthology, 1999
Metazoan parasite communities of Crassostrea gigas and Ostrea edulis from Great Britain, Crassostrea virginica from Mexico, and Saccostrea commercialis from Australia are ...

The nature of parasitism; the relationship of some metazoan parasites to their hosts.

JAMA, 1963
As stated by the author, the chief purpose of this book is to arouse interest in the many problems which must be solved before we can begin to understand the basic features of the host-parasite relationship and the nature of parasitism. The book is divided into four parts.

Single-Cell Transcriptome Profiling of Protozoan and Metazoan Parasites

Trends in Parasitology, 2018
Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq) technologies are changing the way we study populations of cells by allowing for an unbiased characterization of the composition of these populations. This Forum article highlights outstanding questions in parasitology that could benefit from scRNAseq and provides guiding thoughts for planning such experiments.

Metazoan and Protozoan Parasitic Infections in Nude Mice

1978
Congenitally hypothymic, nu/nu (nude) mice have virtually displaced all other types of T-cell-deficient mice in studies on theconsequences of T-cell deficiency, thedissection of T-cell functions, and analyses of T-cell-dependent and T-cell-independent immunological phenomena in vivo.
