Acetate assimilation pathway of Methanosarcina barkeri [PDF]
The pathway of acetate assimilation in Methanosarcina barkeri was determined from analysis of the position of label in alanine, aspartate, and glutamate formed in cells grown in the presence of [14C]acetate and by measurement of enzyme activities in cell extracts.

Studies on an acetate-fermenting strain of Methanosarcina [PDF]
An acetate-fermenting strain of Methanosarcina was isolated from an acetate enrichment culture inoculated with anaerobic sludge from a waste treatment digestor. In pure culture, this organism fermented acetate in the absence of added hydrogen at rates comparable in magnitude to those found in digestor systems.

Dechlorination of Chloroform by Methanosarcina Strains [PDF]
Dehalogenation of carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, and bromoform in pure cultures of Methanosarcina sp. strain DCM and Methanosarcina mazei S6 was demonstrated. The initial dechlorination product of chloroform was methylene chloride (dichloromethane), which accumulated transiently to about ...

Necessity of electrically conductive pili for methanogenesis with magnetite stimulation [PDF]
Background Magnetite-mediated direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between Geobacter and Methanosarcina species is increasingly being invoked to explain magnetite stimulation of methane production in anaerobic soils and sediments.

Rejection of the Type Species Methanosarcina methanica (Approved Lists 1980), Conservation of the Genus Methanosarcina with Methanosarcina barkeri (Approved Lists 1980) as the Type Species, and Emendation of the Genus Methanosarcina: Request for an Opinion [PDF]
We request an Opinion regarding rejection of the type species Methanosarcina methanica (Approved Lists 1980) and conservation of the genus Methanosarcina with Methanosarcina barkeri (Approved Lists 1980) as the type species, and we provide an emended description of the genus Methanosarcina.

Conversion of Kepone byMethanosarcina thermophila [PDF]
Acetate-grown cultures of Methanosarcina thermophila converted uniformly labeled [14C]Kepone to polar and nonpolar products with 86% of the Kepone degraded within the first 10 days. The titanium(III) citrate-reduced CO dehydrogenase enzyme complex isolated from M. thermophila also catalyzed the conversion of Kepone to polar and nonpolar products with a

Metabolic Adaptation of Methanogens in Anaerobic Digesters Upon Trace Element Limitation
Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a complex multi-stage process relying on the activity of highly diverse microbial communities including hydrolytic, acidogenic and syntrophic acetogenic bacteria as well as methanogenic archaea.

Background Demand-driven biogas production could play an important role for future sustainable energy supply. However, feeding a biogas reactor according to energy demand may lead to organic overloading and, thus, to process failures.
