Metal‐Based Materials for CO2 Conversion in MES and PBS Systems
Metal‐based materials bridge abiotic and biological systems, enabling efficient CO2‐to‐chemical conversion via enhanced electron transfer in microbial electrosynthesis and photocatalytic biohybrid systems. ABSTRACT Metal‐based materials—including pure metals, alloys, compounds, and MOFs—play pivotal roles in microbial electrosynthesis (MES) and ...

Expanded diversity of microbial groups capable of anaerobic pyrite reduction. Devon Payne and Eric Boyd. Different microbial guilds were tested for their ability to reductively dissolve pyrite and mobilize iron and sulfur to support growth. Metabolic guilds capable of pyrite reduction were determined (top) and mechanisms of extracellular electron ...

ThermoPhyl : a software tool for selecting phylogenetically optimized conventional and quantitative-PCR taxon-targeted assays for use with complex samples [PDF]
The ability to specifically and sensitively target genotypes of interest is critical for the success of many PCR-based analyses of environmental or clinical samples that contain multiple templates.Next-generation sequence data clearly show that such ...

Thermodynamic modelling of synthetic communities predicts minimum free energy requirements for sulfate reduction and methanogenesis [PDF]
Microbial communities are complex dynamical systems harbouring many species interacting together to implement higher-level functions. Among these higher-level functions, conversion of organic matter into simpler building blocks by microbial communities ...

Nature AND nurture: enabling formate‐dependent growth in Methanosarcina acetivorans
We identified a cytosolic formate dehydrogenase (FdhAB) present in several Methanosarcinales, likely acquired by independent horizontal gene transfers. We engineered two strains of Methanosarcina acetivorans: (a) JB‐MF and (b) JB‐F2 by functionally expressing FdhAB.

Abstract Optical tweezers are widely used in the study of biological macromolecules but are limited by their one‐directional probing capability, potentially missing critical conformational changes. Combining fluorescence microscopy with optical tweezers, employing Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) pairs, addresses this issue.

Metagenomic analysis of three thermophilic species was performed to identify key species for stable biogas production at high free ammonia levels (> 0.7 g/L). Potential acetogens and syntrophic acetate‐oxidising bacteria (SAOB) were recovered by looking for genes of the Wood–Ljungdahl pathway and glycine synthase reductase pathway.
