Nature AND nurture: enabling formate‐dependent growth in Methanosarcina acetivorans

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 292, Issue 9, Page 2251-2271, May 2025.
We identified a cytosolic formate dehydrogenase (FdhAB) present in several Methanosarcinales, likely acquired by independent horizontal gene transfers. We engineered two strains of Methanosarcina acetivorans: (a) JB‐MF and (b) JB‐F2 by functionally expressing FdhAB.

Survival of microorganisms during two-year exposure in outer space near the ISS

open access: yesScientific Reports
Results of an experiment named "Test" on survival and variability of microorganisms in open space near the International Space Station are presented. It was found after two-years exposure, spore-forming bacteria of the species Bacillus subtilis, fungi of

How Small Proteins Adjust the Metabolism of Cyanobacteria Under Stress

open access: yesBioEssays, Volume 47, Issue 3, March 2025.
Cyanobacteria are powered by oxygenic photosynthesis located in extensive internal membrane systems, the thylakoids. Using carboxysomes, they assimilate organic from inorganic carbon. The integration of photosynthesis, carbon fixation, assimilation of nitrogen, and other nutrients involves several small proteins.

Simplified methodology for a modular and genetically expanded protein synthesis in cell-free systems

open access: yesSynthetic and Systems Biotechnology, 2019
Genetic code expansion, which enables the site-specific incorporation of unnatural amino acids into proteins, has emerged as a new and powerful tool for protein engineering.

Regulation of DNA Topology in Archaea: State of the Art and Perspectives

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, Volume 123, Issue 3, Page 245-264, March 2025.
DNA topoisomerases are ubiquitous enzymes that play a crucial role in regulating DNA supercoiling which affects fundamental biological processes involving DNA. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of regulation of supercoiling by DNA topoisomerases in the third domain of life, the Archaea, with a particular focus on three key model ...

sRNA41 affects ribosome binding sites within polycistronic mRNAs in Methanosarcina mazei Gö1 [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, 2018
SummarySeveral noncoding RNAs potentially involved in nitrogen (N)‐regulation have been detected in Methanosarcina mazei, however, targets have been identified only for one of them. Here, we report on the function of sRNA41, highly expressed under N‐sufficiency.

Light‐Activatable Ubiquitin for Studying Linkage‐Specific Ubiquitin Chain Formation Kinetics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 6, February 10, 2025.
Ubiquitin dynamically forms differently linked polyubiquitin chains. To study rapid cellular kinetics of global linkage‐specific ubiquitination, light‐activatable polyubiquitin chain formation is reported via incorporation of a photocaged lysine. Minute‐scale ubiquitination kinetics for different linkages are observed, and the impact of ubiquitination ...

Selection and assembly of indigenous bacteria and methanogens from spent metalworking fluids and their potential as a starting culture in a fluidized bed reactor

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, 2019
Summary Waste metalworking fluids (MWFs) are highly biocidal resulting in real difficulties in the, otherwise favoured, bioremediation of these high chemical oxygen deman (COD) wastes anaerobically in bioreactors.
