Molecular assessment of complex microbial communities degrading long chain fatty acids in methanogenic bioreactors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Microbial diversity of anaerobic sludge after extended contact with long chain fatty acids (LCFA) was studied using molecular approaches. Samples containing high amounts of accumulated LCFA were obtained after continuous loading of two bioreactors ...

A snapshot love story: what serial crystallography has done and will do for us

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section D, Volume 80, Issue 8, Page 563-579, August 2024.
This article gives an overview of current trends and challenges in serial crystallography, with a focus on results from time‐resolved experiments.Serial crystallography, born from groundbreaking experiments at the Linac Coherent Light Source in 2009, has evolved into a pivotal technique in structural biology.

Genetic, Biochemical, and Molecular Characterization of Methanosarcina barkeri Mutants Lacking Three Distinct Classes of Hydrogenase [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The methanogenic archaeon Methanosarcina barkeri encodes three distinct types of hydrogenase, whose functions vary depending on the growth substrate. These include the F_(420)-dependent (Frh), methanophenazine-dependent (Vht), and ferredoxin-dependent ...

Functional and structural characterization of the Methanosarcina mazei proteasome and PAN complexes

open access: yesJournal of Structural Biology, 2006
We have cloned the proteasome and the proteasome activating nucleotidase (PAN) genes from the mesophilic archaeon Methanosarcina mazei and produced the respective proteins in Escherichia coli cultures. The recombinant complexes were purified to homogeneity and characterized biochemically, structurally, and by mass spectrometry.

Genome sequence of Acetomicrobium hydrogeniformans OS1 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Acetomicrobium hydrogeniformans, an obligate anaerobe of the phylum Synergistetes, was isolated from oil production water. It has the unusual ability to produce almost 4 molecules H2/molecule glucose. The draft genome of A.

Evaluation and optimization of PCR primers for selective and quantitative detection of marine ANME subclusters involved in sulfate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Since the discovery that anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME) are involved in the anaerobic oxidation of methane coupled to sulfate reduction in marine sediments, different primers and probes specifically targeting the 16S rRNA gene of these archaea ...

The Methanosarcina barkeri genome: comparative analysis with Methanosarcina acetivorans and Methanosarcina mazei reveals extensive rearrangement within methanosarcinal genomes.

open access: yesJournal of bacteriology, 2006
We report here a comparative analysis of the genome sequence of Methanosarcina barkeri with those of Methanosarcina acetivorans and Methanosarcina mazei. The genome of M. barkeri is distinguished by having an organization that is well conserved with respect to the other Methanosarcina spp.

Crystal Structure of the Apo-Form of NADPH-Dependent Thioredoxin Reductase from a Methane-Producing Archaeon

open access: yesAntioxidants, 2018
The redox regulation of proteins via reversible dithiol/disulfide exchange reactions involves the thioredoxin system, which is composed of a reductant, a thioredoxin reductase (TR), and thioredoxin (Trx).

Towards Reassignment of the Methionine Codon AUG to Two Different Noncanonical Amino Acids in Bacterial Translation

open access: yesCroatica Chemica Acta, 2016
Genetic encoding of noncanonical amino acids (ncAAs) through sense codon reassignment is an efficient tool for expanding the chemical functionality of proteins. Incorporation of multiple ncAAs, however, is particularly challenging.
