Coupling methanogenesis with iron reduction by acetotrophic Methanosarcina mazei zm‐15
Environmental Microbiology Reports, 2022Abstract Application of ferric iron is conventionally considered to inhibit methanogenesis in anoxic environments. Here we show that Methanosarcina mazei zm‐15, a strain isolated from the natural wetland of Tibetan plateau, is capable of Fe(III) reduction, which ...

Geranylfarnesyl diphosphate synthase from Methanosarcina mazei: Different role, different evolution
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2010The gene of (all-E) geranylfarnesyl diphosphate synthase that is responsible for the biosynthesis of methanophenazine, an electron carrier utilized for methanogenesis, was cloned from a methanogenic archaeon Methanosarcina mazei Gö1. The properties of the recombinant enzyme and the results of phylogenetic analysis suggest that the enzyme is closely ...

Production and biophysical characterization of the CorA transporter from Methanosarcina mazei
Analytical Biochemistry, 2009We report here a general strategy to overproduce and characterize membrane transporters. To illustrate our approach, we selected one member of the CorA transporter family among four tested that belonged to different species. This approach is transposable to other membrane proteins and involves the following steps: (i) cloning by homologous ...

Methanosarcina mazei Go1 is a heterotrophic methanogenic archaean contributing a significant role in global methane cycling and biomethanation process. Phylogenomic relatedness and metabolic discrepancy of this genome were described herein by comparing its whole genome sequence, intergenomic distance, genome function, synteny homologs and origin of ...

A new methanogenic isolate, designated as strain O1M9704 (=OCM 667), was isolated from the sediment of the estuarine environment in Eriln Shi, Taiwan. This strain grew on trimethylamine and methanol, but it did not catabolize H2-CO2, acetate, or formate. Cells grew optimally at 37 degrees C with 0.5% NaCl in neutral pH.

Purification of component C from Methanosarcina mazei and immunolocalization in Methanosarcinaceae
Archives of Microbiology, 1987Studies on immunological relationships among Methanosarcina genus using immunofluorescence and immunoprecipitation showed that a common antigen can be extracted by shaking in aqueous phase. This antigen was purified from Methanosarcina mazei. The protein had a molecular weight of 283400 daltons with three subunits, α=68000, β=43200 and γ=30500.
