Methimazole-Induced Serum Sickness
Acta Clinica Belgica, 1983SummaryA female patient with multinodular goiter was treated with methimazole (MMI) for thyrotoxicosis. After 3 weeks, she developped sore throat, pruritus, arthralgias, facial oedema and fever. Biological data were suggesting a scrum sickness. To our knowledge, this is the first published case report of MMI-induced serum sickness. Acta Clin Belg.

Methimazole-Induced Hepatotoxicity
Endocrine Practice, 2002To present the case of a patient with Graves' hyperthyroidism in whom treatment with methimazole led to severe cholestasis.A detailed case report and an overview of previously published cases of methimazole- and carbimazole-induced hepatotoxicity, found in a MEDLINE search with use of methimazole, carbimazole, thionamides and antithyroid agents as ...

Unlike some drug-induced hepatitis, about half of the cases of methimazole-induced hepatitis continue for eight to ten weeks after use of the drug is discontinued. If stopping therapy with the drug fails to produce resolution of the process, percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography should be performed.

TOXICITY OF METHIMAZOLE (TAPAZOLE)
Journal of the American Medical Association, 1954Toxic manifestations of methimazole therapy have been documented by several investigators.1Skin rashes, agranulocytosis, arthritis, and toxic hepatitis have been reported. We wish to report the case of a patient treated with methimazole in whom a sudden marked neuropathy associated with foot drop developed.

While methimazole (MMI) is widely used in the therapy for hyperthyroidism, several groups have reported that maternal exposure to MMI results in a variety of congenital anomalies, including choanal and esophageal atresia, iridic and retinal coloboma, and delayed neurodevelopment.

Methimazole-induced Cholestatic Jaundice
Southern Medical Journal, 2004Methimazole is a widely used and generally well-tolerated antithyroid agent. A 43-year-old woman had severe jaundice and itching 1 month after receiving methimazole (10 mg tid) and propranolol (20 mg tid) for treatment of hyperthyroidism. The patient continued treatment for another 4 days after the appearance of jaundice until she finished both ...

Methimazole Pharmacology in Man: Studies Using a Newly Developed Radioimmunoassay for Methimazole*
The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1984A RIA for the antithyroid drug methimazole [1-methyl-2-mercaptoimidazole (MMI)] has been developed. A MMI derivative, 5-COOH-MMI, was conjugated to porcine thyroglobulin, and antibodies to the conjugate were raised in rabbits. [35S]MMI was used as the tracer. At a final antibody dilution of 1:100, the assay could detect MMI in amounts as low as 2.5 ng.

Adverse Effects of Prenatal Methimazole Exposure
Obstetrical & Gynecological Survey, 2001AbstractBackgroundA specific phenotype of methimazole (MMI) induced malformations has recently been postulated. MMI embryopathy is characterized by minor dysmorphic features, choanal atresia and/or esophageal atresia, growth retardation, and developmental delay.MethodsWe prospectively studied the outcome of pregnancy in 241 women counseled by 10 ...

PROPYLTHIOURACIL AND METHIMAZOLE THERAPY
Journal of the American Medical Association, 1952It is the purpose of this paper to report the results of the use of methimazole ("tapazole") in 45 patients and propylthiouracil in 54 patients in the management of hyperthyroidism at the Indiana University Medical Center and the Indianapolis General Hospital. All these cases were followed by one or more of us.
