Inconsistencies in moment methods
Physical Review E, 2002In this work we show that moment methods devised to solve the Boltzmann kinetic equation for a simple gas exhibit some inconsistencies. This puzzle, which also appears for the Chapman-Enskog method, is solved resorting to a perturbative expansion in the Knudsen number, thus allowing for a clear way to arrive at a closure condition.

Using the kinetic theory of monatomic gases of hard-sphere particles as a base, we develop the method of moments of Grad [Commun. Pure Appl. Math 2, 331 (1949)] within the framework of algebraic computing. In this theory the basic fields are characterized by 13+9N moments of the distribution function, with 0\ensuremath{\le}N\ensuremath{\le}4.

Capacitors and the method of moments
Computers & Electrical Engineering, 2004Abstract The inhomogeneous charge distribution in several plate capacitors is calculated using the Method of Moments. Effects of global and local “inhomogeneities” in the capacitor are simulated.

On image analysis by the methods of moments
Proceedings CVPR '88: The Computer Society Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, 1988Various types of moments have been used to recognize image patterns in a number of applications. A number of moments are evaluated and some fundamental questions are addressed, such as image-representation ability, noise sensitivity, and information redundancy.

Summary: Higher moment analysis has typically been used to upper bound certain functions. In this paper, we introduce a new combinatorial method to lower bound the expectation of the absolute value of a random variable \(X\) by the expectation of a quartic in \(X\). In the special case, where we are looking at the absolute value of a (weighted) sum of \

I propose a method to compute the local density of electronic states in disordered systems. The method makes use of a particular form of the generalized moments of Lambin and Gaspard . It leads to an exact derivation of orthogonalized moments which are simply related to the coefficients of the continued-fraction representation of the density of states.
