Generalization of Quasi-Newton Methods: Application to Robust Symmetric Multisecant Updates
Quasi-Newton (qN) techniques approximate the Newton step by estimating the Hessian using the so-called secant equations. Some of these methods compute the Hessian using several secant equations but produce non-symmetric updates.

Comparing parameter choice methods for regularization of ill-posed problems
In the literature on regularization, many different parameter choice methods have been proposed in both deterministic and stochastic settings. However, based on the available information, it is not always easy to know how well a particular method will ...

A Quasi-Newton Primal-Dual Algorithm with Line Search
International audienceQuasi-Newton methods refer to a class of algorithms at the interface between first and second order methods. They aim to progress as substantially as second order methods per iteration, while maintaining the computational complexity

Discharge‐Targeted Hydraulic Tomography to Quantify and Locate Aquifer Discharge
Abstract Quantifying and localizing groundwater discharge is inherently difficult. It requires knowledge about hydraulic conductivity and the hydraulic gradient on the scale of interest. Conventional hydraulic testing, such as pumping tests, may fail in the presence of heterogeneity and complex structural boundaries.

Heterogeneity in Manufacturing Growth Risk
Abstract We analyze differences in output growth risk with respect to financial conditions across U.S. manufacturing industries. Using a multilevel quantile regression approach, we find that industries exhibit heterogeneous increases of downside risk in times of tight financial conditions, while upside potential remains stable.

A quasi-Newton method using a nonquadratic model
Most “quasi-Newton” methods in common use for function minimisation use a quadratic model to approximate the underlying objective function at the current estimate of the minimum.

Abstract Objective To determine and compare the fixation strength of conjunctival pedicle flaps to cornea achieved via conventional ophthalmic suture and three different adhesive compounds. Animals Studied Ex vivo porcine globes. Procedures Following a 6 mm wide 500‐micron‐restricted depth lamellar keratectomy, conjunctival pedicle flaps were secured ...

Abstract Manned space exploration to distant destinations, including Mars, continues to be an aspiration of humankind. Space travel does, however, present many challenges to the body, amongst which adaptation to microgravity is perhaps the largest. For instance, both short and long manned spaceflight missions have shown substantial deleterious effects ...

When NCX switches sides: Experimental and computational insights into Ca2+ regulation in the heart
Abstract figure legend Due to its presence inside the dyadic cleft, Na+/Ca2+ exchanger (NCX) builds a functional unit together with L‐type calcium channels and ryanodine receptors in the dyadic cleft. NCX acts bidirectionally (forward and reverse mode) dependent on extracellular calcium ([Ca2+]o) and sodium ([Na+]o) concentrations and the membrane ...
