Epidermal Innervation in Methylcholanthrene-painted Mouse Skin

IN order to investigate the innervation of experimental tumours, we painted the right ear and flank of BALB mice with a saturated solution of 20-methylcholanthrene (MCA) in benzene, and painted the left side with benzene alone. We have found that MCA evokes a prompt growth response by the regional cutaneous nerves.

Epidemiologic studies show an increase in the incidence of pancreatic carcinoma and suggest that this increase may result, at least in part, from increased exposure to chemical carcinogens. Little information is available concerning the uptake of such agents or their effects on the pancreas.

CYP1A1 is largely involved in carcinogenesis through the bioactivation of numerous procarcinogens. Exposure to environmental pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) leads to induction of CYP1A1 via AhR pathway. IT has long been known that the administration of methylcholanthrene by the alimentary tract can produce mammary tumours in certain strains of mice and rats. Prohaska, Brunschwig and Wilson1 first reported four mammary tumours in 15 mice fed 1.2 mg methylcholanthrene three times weekly for up to six weeks.
