Methylmalonic Acid Inhibits Respiration in Rat Liver Mitochondria
The Journal of Nutrition, 1995Methylmalonic acid (MMA), which accumulates and is excreted in urine in mammals during vitamin B-12 deficiency, has been reported to inhibit succinate dehydrogenase, an enzyme involved in the mitochondrial tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle in rat liver.

Gas chromatographic determination of urinary methylmalonic acid
Analytical Biochemistry, 1967Abstract A method for the determination of methylmalonic acid in urine has been developed. The method consists of essentially two operations: ( 1 ) A separation of methylmalonic acid from most of the urinary components by ion-exchange chromatography.

Ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol attenuate methylmalonic acid-induced convulsions
NeuroReport, 1999The effects of chronic administration of alpha-tocopherol or melatonin, or acute ascorbic acid administration on the convulsant action of methylmalonic acid (MMA) were investigated in adult male rats. Animals were chronically injected with alpha-tocopherol (40 mg kg(-1), i.p.), melatonin (5 mg kg(-1), i.p.) or vehicle for 7 days.

Comparison of automated and manual methods of estimation of methylmalonic acid
Analytical Biochemistry, 1975Abstract An automated method for estimation of methylmalonic acid in urine is described that compares well with results obtained by a manual method. The temperature at which color is developed can be set anywhere between ambient and 90°C without loss of linearity over a certain range of concentrations. The higher temperatures have greater sensitivity

Urinary Methylmalonic Acid to Detect Vitamin B12 Deficiency
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1995To the Editor. —In a recent Questions and Answers section, Dr Upshaw 1 asked which test to use to establish true functional vitamin B 12 deficiency. Dr Carmel, in reply, suggested the serum methylmalonic acid (MMA) assay noting, however, its limitations of expense and specificity. Recently, a review article on this subject recommended the urinary MMA
