Synthetic Methane-Consuming Communities from a Natural Lake Sediment

open access: yesmBio, 2019
The factors and processes that influence the behavior and functionality of ecosystems inhabited by complex microbiomes are still far from being clearly understood.

Nascently generated microplastics in freshwater stream are colonized by bacterial communities from stream and riparian sources

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Quality, Volume 53, Issue 5, Page 577-588, September/October 2024.
Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine bacterial colonization of different types of microplastics through time in a freshwater ecosystem. Microplastics are persistent pollutants in aquatic ecosystems. Bacteria readily colonize microplastic surfaces and may contribute to their degradation, but the taxa involved, and their degradative ...

Identification of Aerobic ETBE‐Degrading Microorganisms in Groundwater Using Stable Isotope Probing

open access: yesGroundwater Monitoring &Remediation, Volume 44, Issue 4, Page 92-103, Fall 2024.
Abstract A limited number of microorganisms have been identified with the capability to degrade ethyl tert‐butyl ether (ETBE) in the environment. Knowledge of the identity and distribution of ETBE‐degrading microorganisms is important for the implementation of management measures such as natural attenuation and bioremediation at ETBE‐release sites.

Biotechnological conversion of methane to methanol: evaluation of progress and potential [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Sources of methane are numerous, and vary greatly in their use and sustainable credentials. A Jekyll and Hyde character, it is a valuable energy source present as geological deposits of natural gas, however it is also potent greenhouse gas, released ...

Methanol excretion by Methylomonas methanica is induced by the supernatant of a methanotrophic consortium

open access: yesJournal of Chemical Technology &Biotechnology, Volume 99, Issue 6, Page 1356-1363, June 2024.
Abstract BACKGROUND Methanotrophs play an important role in mitigating methane (CH4) emissions in ecosystems. They closely interact with other microorganisms forming communities where the cross‐feeding of metabolites, presumably methanol (MeOH), is essential for the growth and activity of non‐methanotrophs. The experiments in this study were focused on

Methane fluxes, microbial activities and community structures in a wet tundra of the Lena Delta [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Wet tundra environments of the Arctic are natural sources of the climate relevant trace gas methane. The underlying biogeochemical processes are not yet well understood.

Anaerobic oxidation of methane associated with sulfate reduction in a natural freshwater gas source [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The occurrence of anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and trace methane oxidation (TMO) was investigated in a freshwater natural gas source. Sediment samples were taken and analyzed for potential electron acceptors coupled to AOM.

Seasonal variation in metabolic profiles and microbial communities in a subarctic ore processing plant

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 16, Issue 3, June 2024.
The microbial communities in a northern ore processing plant were compared in summer and winter. Distinct seasonal communities were identified with higher microbial numbers and specific metabolic capacities, such as heavy metal resistance, sulphate/thiosulphate, molybdate, iron(III) and Zinc transport, nitrate reduction, denitrification, thiosulphate ...

Active coexistence of the novel gammaproteobacterial methanotroph ‘Ca. Methylocalor cossyra’ CH1 and verrucomicrobial methanotrophs in acidic, hot geothermal soil

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 3, March 2024.
The genome and ecophysiology of a novel gammaproteobacterial methanotroph isolated from geothermal soil were analysed. This bacterium can grow at pH values as low as pH 3.5 and temperatures up to 55°C and coexists with verrucomicrobial methanotrophs in the hot volcanic soil on Pantelleria island.
