Halffter’s Mexican Transition Zone, beetle generalized tracks, and geographical homology

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, 2001
AimHalffter’s Mexican Transition Zone is a complex area in which the Neotropical and Nearctic regions overlap. We test its existence and extension through a track analysis of beetle taxa, and discuss the implications of geographical homology.LocationThe area analysed corresponds to the Caribbean subregion, which occupies Mexico, Central America, north ...

A Historical Perspective of the Mexican Transition Zone

open access: yes, 2020
Several authors have considered that the complex area where the Neotropical and Nearctic biotas overlap corresponds to a transition zone. In the strict sense that is followed in this book, the Mexican Transition Zone includes the highlands of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua north of Lake Nicaragua, whereas northern Mexico, the ...

Distributional patterns of freshwater taxa (fishes, crustaceans and plants) from the Mexican Transition Zone

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, 2006
AbstractAim To test whether distributional patterns of Neotropical freshwater taxa fit the generalized tracks already postulated for terrestrial groups occurring in the Mexican Transition Zone.Location The study units comprised 17 hydrological basins located along the Pacific coast of the Americas from Mexico to Panama, and in the Gulf of Mexico from ...

Gymnosperms and cladistic biogeography of the Mexican Transition Zone

open access: yesTaxon, 2007
Distributional patterns of 81 species of three genera of Mexican gymnosperms ( Ceratozamia, Dioon, Pinus ) were analyzed to evaluate their contribution to the cladistic biogeography of the Mexican Transition Zone, applying Brooks Parsimony Analysis (BPA) and parsimony analysis of paralogy ...

Three new species of Botanophila Lioy (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) from the Mexican Transition Zone

open access: yesZootaxa, 2021
The genus Botanophila Lioy has several species distributed in North America, but none had been recorded from Mexico. Here we describe three new species of Botanophila from the highlands of the Mexican Transition Zone. We include images of habitus, drawings of the terminalia and a key to facilitate the identification of species.

New species of Centris (Xanthemisia) Moure from the Mesoamerican Dominion and the Mexican Transition Zone (Hymenoptera: Apidae)

open access: yesZootaxa, 2023
Three new species of oil-collecting bees of the genus Centris (Xanthemisia) Moure are described and illustrated: C. jakalteka sp. nov., C. maya sp. nov. and C. purhepecha sp. nov. The new proposed taxa are distributed in the north of the Neotropical Region, specifically in the Mesoamerican Dominion and the Mexican Transition Zone, between the ...

Testing the biogeographical regionalization of the Mexican Transition Zone based on the distribution of Curculionidae (Insecta: Coleoptera)

open access: yesZootaxa, 2018
A test of the biogeographical regionalization of the Mexican Transition Zone (MTZ) is presented, resulting from a Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity (PAE) based on the distributional patterns of 575 species of the family Curculionidae. The analysis was carried out in three stages.

Track analysis of the Mexican species of Buprestidae (Coleoptera): testing the complex nature of the Mexican Transition Zone

Journal of Biogeography, 2009
AbstractAim We analysed the geographical distributions of species of Buprestidae (Coleoptera) in Mexico by means of a panbiogeographical analysis, in order to identify their main distributional patterns and test the complex nature of the Mexican Transition Zone, located between the Nearctic and Neotropical regions.Location Mexico.Methods The ...

Phylogeography of Middle American gophersnakes: mixed responses to biogeographical barriers across the Mexican Transition Zone

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, 2011
Aim We used inferences of phylogeographical structure and estimates of divergence times for three species of gophersnakes (Colubridae: Pituophis) distributed across the Mexican Transition Zone (MTZ) to evaluate the postulated association of three Neogene
