Alloy solid solution strengthening of Mg alloys: Valence effect

physica status solidi (b), 2012
AbstractAb initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to investigate alloy solid solution strengthening of hexagonal close packed (HCP) Mg. The binary solid solution Mg–X base alloys (X = Gd, Nd, Ce, Bi, In, and Sn) were examined to identify a possible valence effect on the solution strengthening in terms of electronic density

Metallography of Mg Alloys

2019
Processing and composition determine microstructural properties. To reveal the microstructure, the metallographic investigation is a commonly used method, and therefore, it is a crucial part in the characterization of metals and alloys. Choosing incorrect preparation steps will lead to artefacts and misleading conclusions due to the compositional ...

Applications of thermodynamic calculations to Mg alloy design: Mg–Sn based alloy development

International Journal of Materials Research, 2007
Abstract Recently an Mg – Sn based alloy system has been investigated actively in order to develop new magnesium alloys which have a stable structure and good mechanical properties at high temperatures. Thermodynamic modeling of the Mg – Al – Mn – Sb – Si – Sn – Zn system was performed based on available thermodynamic, phase equilibria ...

Mg-Rich Light Alloys Synthesised by Mechanical Alloying

Key Engineering Materials, 2002
In this work, MgxTi1-x (x = 18, 50 and 95 at.%) and Mg88Ti4Si7 alloys were synthesised by mechanical alloying. Phase transformations occurring in the samples as a function of milling time and during subsequent heating were studied by means of x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and electron probe ...

Understanding the Corrosion of Mg and Mg Alloys

2018
This article summarizes current, fundamental knowledge of the corrosion of magnesium, and highlights some latest developments. Mg is a most reactive metal. The high available reaction energy, and because the simultaneous exchange of two electrons is forbidden by quantum mechanics, means that there is a highly reactive intermediate that can chemically ...

Amorphization of MgZn alloys by mechanical alloying

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 1989
Abstract We report for the first time on the synthesis of magnesium-based amorphous alloy powders using mechanical grinding. We synthesize an amorphous powder of the nominal composition Mg 70 Zn 30 . Using X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) we analyse the details of the magnesium reaction as well as the crystallization ...

The current trends of Mg alloys in biomedical applications-A review.

Journal of Biomedical Materials Research. Part B - Applied biomaterials, 2018
Magnesium (Mg) has emerged as an ideal alternative to the permanent implant materials owing to its enhanced properties such as biodegradation, better mechanical strengths than polymeric biodegradable materials and biocompatibility.

Precipitation Processes in Mg–Th, Mg–Th–Mn, Mg–Mn, and Mg–Zr Alloys

Metal Science Journal, 1972
Abstract A study has been made of precipitation processes in selected magnesium-base alloys by means of electron microscopy. The principal part of the investigation was concerned with the effect of manganese precipitation in a Mg-Th alloy. It is shown that the sequence of precipitation in a Mg–2.0percnt; Th–1.0% Mn alloy (HM21) is not as complex as ...

Mechanical alloying and milling of Al–Mg alloys

Journal of Alloys and Compounds, 2009
Abstract Solid solubility extension of Mg in Al was achieved for the binary Al–Mg system in the range of 10–40 at.% Mg by mechanical alloying of elemental powder mixtures and by mechanical milling of pre-alloyed ingots. No indication for the formation of the equilibrium phases (β-Al3Mg2 and γ-Al12Mg17) after milling was observed.
