Effect of Laser Deoxidation on Adhesive‐Bonded Aluminum in an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser ablation of aluminum under oxygen‐free conditions. The goal is to produce oxide‐free substrates that enable improved adhesive bonding with epoxy. Optimized laser parameters (90% overlap, 300 µJ) combined with oxide‐free substrates result in the highest tensile strength of the adhesive bond.

Productivity‐Driven Optimization of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Parameters for IN718 Superalloy: Process Control, Microstructure, and Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates how optimizing laser power, scanning speed, and hatching distance in laser powder bed fusion can boost the productivity of Inconel 718 manufacturing by up to 29% while maintaining mechanical integrity. The work delivers a validated process window and cost–time analysis, offering industry‐ready guidelines for efficient additive ...

Micro-Computed Tomography Soft Tissue Biological Specimens Image Data Visualization

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
Visualization of soft tissues in microCT scanning using X-rays is still a complicated matter. There is no simple tool or methodology on how to set up an optimal look-up-table while respecting the type of soft tissue.

High-resolution 3D weld toe stress analysis and ACPD method for weld toe fatigue crack initiation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Weld toe fatigue crack initiation is highly dependent on the local weld toe stress-concentrating geometry including any inherent flaws. These flaws are responsible for premature fatigue crack initiation (FCI) and must be minimised to maximise the fatigue

Towards Defect Phase Diagrams: From Research Data Management to Automated Workflows

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A research data management infrastructure is presented for the systematic integration of heterogeneous experimental and simulation data required for defect phase diagrams. The approach combines openBIS with a companion application for large‐object storage, automated metadata extraction, provenance tracking and federated data access, thereby supporting ...

Airway dimensions measured from micro-computed tomography and high-resolution computed tomography [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Respiratory Journal, 2006
Volume averaging results in both over- and underestimation of airway dimensions when they are measured by high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT). The current authors calibrated computerised measurements of airway dimensions from HRCT against a novel three-dimensional micro-computed tomography (CT) standard, which has a 50-fold greater resolution ...

Salamander braincase morphology as revealed by micro‐computed tomography

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, 2022
Abstract Morphological data sets are misleading in salamander (Caudata) phylogeny due to the relative homoplasy of the dermal skull observed in paedomorphic forms, leading to the trend of excluding morphology when exploring questions of salamander phylogeny.

3D imaging of clay minerals inside sandstone: pushing the spatial resolution limits using ptychographic tomography [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Characterization of microporous, clay-sized particles in natural stone is essential for the understanding of their dynamics. These processes are importand in the fields of oil and gas, groundwater, building stone weathering and soil science. Methods such

Multifunctional Crushing and Piezoresistive Self‐Sensing in Conductive Epoxy/CNT‐Coated Polyetherimide TPMS Lattices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study reports lightweight polyetherimide triply periodic minimal surfaces lattices coated with carbon nanotube‐reinforced epoxy that combine mechanical robustness with self‐sensing. The conformal coating enhances stiffness, strength and energy absorption while enabling reliable strain monitoring.
