Predicting coarse aggregate performance using the micro-Deval test with strength and intrinsic particle property tests

open access: yes, 2005
Numerous tests exist in the field of aggregate qualification which have little to no relation to field performance. Many aggregate sources have been restricted in their use due to non-conforming results from a test that has little relation to field performance.

Micro-Deval Testing of Aggregates in the Southeast

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2003
Aggregate used in hot-mix asphalt (HMA) must be tough and durable, not only to withstand the effects of HMA production, transportation, and construction but also to resist the effects of traffic and the environment. Historically, the Los Angeles abrasion and impact test has determined the toughness of aggregates.

Micro-Deval Test for the Assessment of Bituminous Aggregate Durability

Journal of ASTM International, 2007
Abstract Bituminous aggregates from a total of 52 sources located in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, and Missouri were evaluated using both Micro-Deval and magnesium sulfate soundness tests. Each aggregate was also characterized using petrography, absorption, and specific gravity.

Adaptation of the Micro-Deval Test for Assessing the Surface Weathering Degree of Granite

Journal of ASTM International, 2009
Abstract The paper summarizes recent results obtained from a new wear test performed on fresh and artificially aged rocks. Four different types of granitic rocks with different mineral compositions and grain sizes were selected for this study.

Assessing the Micro-Deval Test for Compacted Dense-Graded Asphalt

Advances in Civil Engineering Materials, 2019
Abstract In recent years, the asphalt industry has been increasingly evaluating mixture testing for a variety of purposes. This article assesses the Micro-Deval (MD) test for its ability to evaluate compacted dense-graded asphalt mixtures. Historically, the MD test has been used to evaluate durability characteristics of loose aggregates,

Long-Term Wear of Aggregates Assessed by Micro-Deval Tests

2018
Aggregate tests are used worldwide to assess the durability of crushed stone. These standardized test methods aim to determine the resistance to wear by using given rotations as it is described in the European Norm of Micro-Deval test (EN 1097-1:2012). It recommends 12,000 rotations to determine the Micro-Deval coefficient of a rock.

Assessing the Polishing Characteristics of Coarse Aggregates Using Micro-Deval and Imaging System

Paving Materials and Pavement Analysis, 2010
Aggregates used in asphalt concrete should be tough and durable to withstand hot mix asphalt (HMA) production, transportation, construction, traffic loads and environmental effects. Aggregate morphology not only plays an important role in aggregates’ mechanical properties but also influences the asphalt pavement skid resistance.

Evaluation of Ballast Particle Degradation Under Micro-Deval Testing Using Photogrammetry

2021
Railway ballast plays an important role in the economic efficiency and sustainability of the rail transport. In this context, the morphology of its particles, in what regards the shape, angularity and surface texture, is critical and affects the mechanical performance of this aggregate material.

Characterization of Aggregate Susceptibility to Polishing Using the Micro-Deval Test

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board
Skid resistance is a critical pavement surface property affecting roadway safety, especially under wet weather conditions. This study evaluated the frictional characteristics of a wide variety of aggregates used in roadway construction in Ohio. The micro-Deval test was used to apply different levels of polishing (0, 60, 180, and 360 min) to each ...

Comparative Evaluation of Micro-Deval Abrasion Test with Other Toughness/Abrasion Resistance and Soundness Tests

Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, 2008
This study presents the findings from a research investigation conducted to characterize the toughness/abrasion resistance and soundness of aggregates from 23 sources using the micro-Deval, Los Angeles (LA) abrasion, sodium sulfate soundness, and magnesium sulfate soundness tests.
