Human Gut Bacteria and Lipidic Nanoparticles: Particle Composition Predicts Structural Transformation and Bacterial Biocompatibility

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Lipidic nanoparticles (LNPs) were incubated with 21 gut bacteria frequently associated with the human microbiome. SAXS revealed that ∼75% of tested species induced structural transformations in monoolein LNPs, whereas phytantriol and phospholipid formulations remained unaffected.

Microbial taxonomical composition in spruce phyllosphere, but not community functional structure, varies by geographical location [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2019
Previous studies indicate that the plant phenotypic traits eventually shape its microbiota due to the community assembly based on the functional types.

Stress response characteristics of indigenous microorganisms in aromatic-hydrocarbons-contaminated groundwater in the cold regions of Northeast China

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 2022
The resistance mechanism of microbial communities in contaminated groundwater under combined stresses of aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs), NH4+, and Fe–Mn exceeding standard levels was studied in an abandoned oil depot in Northeast China.

A coexistence theory in microbial communities [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2018
Microbes are widespread in natural ecosystems where they create complex communities. Understanding the functions and dynamics of such microbial communities is a very important theme not only for ecology but also for humankind because microbes can play major roles in our health. Yet, it remains unclear how such complex ecosystems are maintained.

Bacterial‐Electrochemical Platform Utilizing a MXene‐Peptide Hydrogel

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A peptide‐based fibrillar hydrogel incorporating MXene facilitates efficient electron delivery to intracellular recombinant [FeFe]‐hydrogenase enzyme in E. coli, enabling sustained bioelectrochemical H2 production without engineered exoelectrogenicity pathways.

Microbial keratitis: a community eye health approach

open access: yesCommunity Eye Health Journal, 2015
Microbial keratitis is an infection of the cornea. Corneal opacities, which are frequently due to microbial keratitis, remain among the top five causes of blindness worldwide.

High-resolution in situ imaging reveals size-specific moonlight responses in zooplankton diel vertical migration

open access: yesScientific Reports
Light is the primary cue driving zooplankton diel vertical migration (DVM), a strategy that balances predation risk with resource access. However, DVM is often oversimplified, with limited consideration of how light-driven risks and resource needs vary ...

Phylogenetic analysis of microbial communities in different regions of the gastrointestinal tract in Panaque nigrolineatus, a wood-eating fish

open access: yes, 2012
The Neotropical detritivorous catfish Panaque nigrolineatus imbibes large quantities of wood as part of its diet. Due to the interest in cellulose, hemi-cellulose and lignin degradation pathways, this organism provides an interesting model system for the
