Revealing the hierarchical structure of microbial communities

open access: yesScientific Reports
AbstractMeasuring the dynamics of microbial communities results in high-dimensional measurements of taxa abundances over time and space, which is difficult to analyze due to complex changes in taxonomic compositions. This paper presents a new method to investigate and visualize the intrinsic hierarchical community structure implied by the measurements.

Microbial community structure in the North Pacific ocean [PDF]

open access: yesThe ISME Journal, 2009
Abstract We report a ribosomal tag pyrosequencing study of the phylogenetic diversity of Archaea, Bacteria and Eucarya over a depth profile at the Hawaii Ocean Time-Series Station, ALOHA. The V9 region of the SSU rRNA gene was amplified from samples representing the epi- (10 m), meso- (800 m) and bathy- (4400 m) pelagia. The primers used

Microbial communities in the phyllosphere and endosphere of Norway spruce under attack by Heterobasidion

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
Heterobasidion annosum species complex has been regarded as the most destructive disease agent of conifer trees in boreal forests. Tree microbiome can regulate the plant–pathogen interactions by influencing both host resistance and pathogen virulence ...

Shift in Microbial Community Structure with Temperature in Deulajhari Hot Spring Cluster, Odisha, India

open access: yesJournal of Pure and Applied Microbiology, 2022
Hot springs are the reservoirs of novel hyperthermophilic and often mesophilic bacteria that provide information about the prevailing community structure.

Stochastic Community Assembly: Does It Matter in Microbial Ecology? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Understanding the mechanisms controlling community diversity, functions, succession, and biogeography is a central, but poorly understood, topic in ecology, particularly in microbial ecology.

Links between soil microbial communities and plant traits in a species-rich grassland under long-term climate change [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Climate change can influence soil microorganisms directly by altering their growth and activity but also indirectly via effects on the vegetation, which modifies the availability of resources.

Characterizing the salivary RNA landscape to identify potential diagnostic, prognostic, and follow‐up biomarkers for breast cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study explores salivary RNA for breast cancer (BC) diagnosis, prognosis, and follow‐up. High‐throughput RNA sequencing identified distinct salivary RNA signatures, including novel transcripts, that differentiate BC from healthy controls, characterize histological and molecular subtypes, and indicate lymph node involvement.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Rethinking plastic waste: innovations in enzymatic breakdown of oil‐based polyesters and bioplastics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Plastic pollution remains a critical environmental challenge, and current mechanical and chemical recycling methods are insufficient to achieve a fully circular economy. This review highlights recent breakthroughs in the enzymatic depolymerization of both oil‐derived polyesters and bioplastics, including high‐throughput protein engineering, de novo ...

Seasonality regulates the effects of acid rain on microbial community in a subtropical agricultural soil of Southern China

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 2021
Acid rain alters soil carbon (C) cycling by influencing the soil microbial community structure and functions. However, the response of soil microbial communities to acid rain with time and underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood.
