Energetic Basis of Microbial Growth and Persistence in Desert Ecosystems

open access: yesmSystems, 2020
Microbial life is surprisingly abundant and diverse in global desert ecosystems. In these environments, microorganisms endure a multitude of physicochemical stresses, including low water potential, carbon and nitrogen starvation, and extreme temperatures.

Beneficial microbial consortium improves winter rye performance by modulating bacterial communities in the rhizosphere and enhancing plant nutrient acquisition

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2023
The beneficial effect of microbial consortium application on plants is strongly affected by soil conditions, which are influenced by farming practices.

Lab‐in‐a‐Tube System Integrating Hierarchically Wrinkled Electrodes and DNAzyme‐Functionalized Beads for Diagnosis of Clostridioides difficile Infection

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The point‐of‐care diagnosis of Clostridioides difficile infection remains challenging due to reliance on slow culture and amplification‐based methods. A lab‐in‐a‐tube electrochemical biosensor integrating DNAzymes, antifouling magnetic beads, and a hierarchically structured flow cell enables amplification‐ and culture‐free detection directly in stool ...

Microbial dormancy under freeze–thaw cycling regulates alpine soil responses to warming

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Microbial regulation of soil carbon cycling in cold ecosystems remains poorly constrained in Earth system models, largely due to limited observations and unresolved mechanisms.

Hypersaline Lake Environments Exhibit Reduced Microbial Dormancy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
From acid seeps and deep-sea thermal vents to glacial ice and hypersaline lakes, extreme environments contain relatively simplified communities consisting of extremophiles that have evolved to survive and thrive under adverse abiotic conditions.

Seeing the forest for the genes: using metagenomics to infer the aggregated traits of microbial communities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Most environments harbor large numbers of microbial taxa with ecologies that remain poorly described and characterizing the functional capabilities of whole communities remains a key challenge in microbial ecology.

3D‐Printed Corneal Substitutes: Materials, Fabrication, and Preclinical Progress

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Successful clinical translation of 3D‐printed corneal substitutes relies on the interplay between the bioink properties, cellular component, and the fabrication process. These factors influence the critical properties of the construct, including optical transparency, mechanical stability, suture retention, that ultimately govern long‐term stromal ...

Challenges in using CellTracker Green on foraminifers that host algal endosymbionts [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2018
The uses of fluorescent microscopy and fluorescent probes, such as the metabolically activated probe CellTracker™  Green CMFDA (CTG), have become common in studies of living Foraminifera.

Listeria monocytogenes Sublethal Injury and Viable-but-Nonculturable State Induced by Acidic Conditions and Disinfectants

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum, 2021
The dormancy continuum hypothesis states that in response to stress, cells enter different stages of dormancy ranging from unstressed living cells to cell death, in order to ensure their long-term survival under adverse conditions.

Bifidobacterium Pseudolongum‐Derived Inosine Mitigates Polystyrene Nanoplastics‐Induced Hepatic Injury by Inhibiting the Polarization of M1 Macrophages

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Probiotic B.p colonization elevated gut‐derived inosine level in the liver, while elevated inosine activated A2AR and subsequently blocked NPs‐induced polarization of M1 macrophages by repressing the miR155/SOCS1/NF‐κB pathway. This reduced the release of inflammatory cytokines and thereby, mitigated NPs‐induced hepatic injury.
