Occurrence of microbodies in chloromonadophycean algae

Microbody-like organelles occur in the cytoplasm of two chloromonadophycean algae,Vacuolaria virescens Cienkowsky andGonyostomum semen Diesing. Microbodies ofVacuolaria andGonyostomum have a granular matrix which lacks a crystalloid core; they are often present in close association with elements of the endoplasmic reticulum.

Size of the Microbody Population in Sunflower Cotyledons During the Transition in Cotyledonary Microbody Function

Summary Microbody fractions not contaminated by mitochondria, plastids, or protein bodies were isolated from sunflower cotyledons during the transition of the cotyledonary microbody population from glyoxysomal to leaf peroxisomal function. In these microbody fractions, specific enzyme activities could be determined based on microbody protein content.

Microbodies in Different Algae

Microbodies with distinctive morphological features in electron micrographs were first described in 1954. Since then they have been seen, not only in many animal and plant tissues but also in protozoa, fungi and algae, indicating that their occurrence is ubiquitous (Hruban and Rechcigl 1969, Gerhardt 1978).

The development of microbodies involves an import of proteins across the organelle membrane. Details of this process were studied with glyoxysomal malate dehydrogenase from watermelon cotyledons. The enzyme was synthesized as a cytosolic, higher–molecular–weight precursor (41 kD).

The cells of the supracaudal gland of guinea pig have abundant cytoplasm, round and ovoid mitochondria, abundant free ribosomes, a few rough cisternae, abundant vesicular reticulum, complex agglomerates of tubular reticulum, a few residual bodies and a few multivesicular bodies. Golgi complex is small. Electron lucid lipid droplets are numerous.

The glycosome of trypanosomes: Properties and biogenesis of a microbody

The glycosomes of the Kinetoplastida are microbodies specialized in glycolysis. The unique sequestering of glycolytic enzymes inside a distinct cellular compartment enables these organisms to carry out a high glycolytic rate. The glycosomal proteins are synthesized in the cytosol, in their mature form, and are then rapidly transferred to the organelle.
