Structural Colors from Modulated Topological Defects in Molecular Smectic Liquid Crystals

Rather than using dyes and pigments, nature produces the colors of some butterflies and beetles through optical interference phenomena. This study describes an original biomimetic strategy exploiting the spontaneous formation of modulated linear defects in thin films of 8CB, a common molecular liquid crystal.

Photo‐Gated Corona Microfluidics

Photo‐gated corona microfluidics decouples optical programming from electric‐field actuation to enable reconfigurable manipulation on open, electrode‐pattern‐free surfaces. Developing Soft Interconnected Microchannel Network for 2D Skin‐Like Actuator

A soft interconnected network of microchannels is proposed to develop new pneumatic actuators for future bio‐inspired soft robots. Simultaneous stimulation of this network generates regional asymmetric strains in walls of microchannels whose interaction across the entire surface leads to bending curvatures in multidimensions.
