Co‐presence of black soldier fly frass, soil‐biodegradable mulch films, and earthworms: effects on film biodegradation, ecotoxicity, and microbial community

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, Volume 105, Issue 14, Page 8094-8107, November 2025.
Abstract Background Soil‐biodegradable mulch films (SBF) are used increasingly to enhance crop yields while addressing soil pollution and disposal issues. Another sustainable practice gaining attention is the use of soil amendments derived from waste, such as insect frass from Hermetia illucens.

The Effect of starter Cultures on the Portuguese Traditional Sausage "Paio do Alentejo" in Terms of its Sensory and Textural Characteristics and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Profile [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
“Paio do Alentejo” is a Portuguese dry-cured sausage, made with meat from the Alentejano pig breed. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the benefits of the use of starter cultures on the quality of the sausage, mainly with regard to its sensory ...

The Lipolytic Activity of Micrococcaceae from Human and Animal Sources [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Medical Microbiology, 1973
Summary Gram-positive, catalase-positive cocci from man and animals were examined for lipolytic action in egg-yolk glucose broth and on various Tween compounds. The reaction in egg-yolk glucose broth was given by some coagulase-positive staphylococci but not by any of the coagulase-negative strains.

Decoding Wheat Endosphere–Rhizosphere Microbiomes in Rhizoctonia solani–Infested Soils Challenged by Streptomyces Biocontrol Agents

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2019
The endosphere and the rhizosphere are pertinent milieus with microbial communities that perturb the agronomic traits of crop plants through beneficial or detrimental interactions.

The Toothbrush Microbiome: Impact of User Age, Period of Use and Bristle Material on the Microbial Communities of Toothbrushes

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2020
Toothbrushes play a central role in oral hygiene and must be considered one of the most common articles of daily use. We analysed the bacterial colonization of used toothbrushes by next generation sequencing (NGS) and by cultivation on different media ...

Feather Microbiota Landscapes: Biogeography and Phenology Shape Feather Microbiota Traits in a Migratory Seabird in a Subantarctic Ecosystem

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 34, Issue 21, November 2025.
ABSTRACT It is known that phenological changes (i.e., behavioural and sometimes morphological and physiological traits that repeat annually) influence the wildlife gut microbiota. However, it remains largely unknown to what extent geographic variation could modulate the effect that phenology has on wildlife microbiota.

Prebiotic biostimulation for enhanced soil microbial activity and growth of diverse native grasses

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, Volume 33, Issue 8, November 2025.
Given the urgency of addressing grassy ecosystem loss, there is a growing demand for cost‐effective, evidence‐based restoration and revegetation strategies for Poacaeae. Prebiotics applied to soils to promote microbial activity and diversity are widely used for grass crops in agriculture, but their efficacy in improving native grass establishment ...

Protease and esterase activity of staphylococci [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The aim of this work was to characterize protease and esterase activities of staphylococci in order to establish if they could contribute to the release of amino acids and short-chain fatty acids during ripening of fermented sausages.
