Nutrient inversion but not warming drive changes in periphyton biomass and composition in shallow lake mesocosms

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 70, Issue S2, Page S140-S154, December 2025.
Abstract Periphyton plays an important functional role in shallow lakes and is sensitive to variation in nutrient availability and global warming. Understanding the responses of periphyton to changes in nutrient availability in contrasting warming scenarios can contribute to the development of more efficient techniques for the restoration of lakes in a

NATURAL ANTIOXIDANT PRODUCTION BY Oscillatoria Sp. AND Microcystis Sp. FROM PONDS OF PURI DISTRICT, ODISHA [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Microbiology Research, 2012
The implications of diet on health sustainability have assumed a major importance. Microcystis are able to enhance the nutritional content of conventional food and feed preparation and hence to positively affect humans and animal health due to their original chemical compositions, protein contents, antioxidant properties, vitamins and other ...

Coadaptation shapes ecological interactions in mixotroph‐resource systems

open access: yesOikos, Volume 2025, Issue 12, December 2025.
Mixotrophs combining autotrophy and heterotrophy are ubiquitous in aquatic environments and significantly influence ecosystem functioning. Mixotrophs may adapt their nutritional mode in response to selection, becoming more heterotrophic or more autotrophic over time.

A miniature insertion element transposable in Microcystis sp. FACHB 854*

open access: yesProgress in Natural Science, 2006
A 186-bp sequence with imperfect terminal inverted repeats and target direct repeats but without any transposase-encoding capacity was found to be transposable in an isolate derived from Microcystis sp. FACHB 854. This miniature insertion element, designated as ISM854-1, and with its homologues present at least 10 copies in the genome of Microcystis ...

Predator-prey interactions between the ciliate Blepharisma americanum and toxic (Microcystis spp.) and non-toxic (Chlorella vulgaris, Microcystis sp.) photosynthetic microbes [PDF]

open access: yesAquatic Microbial Ecology, 2019
Despite free-living protozoa being a major factor in modifying aquatic autotrophic biomass ciliate cyanobacteria interactions and their functional ecological roles have been poorly described, especially with toxic cyanobacteria. Trophic relationships have been neglected and grazing experiments give contradictory evidence when toxic taxa such as ...

The phytoplankton of an enriched, soft-water lakel subject to intermittent hydraulic flushing (Grasmere, English Lake District) [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
This paper describes some characteristic features of the phytoplankton of Grasmere, one of the smaller of the principal lakes of the English Lake District, and attempts to relate these to distinctive physical and chemical properties of the lake ...

Recent occurrence of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, in Waikato lakes of New Zealand. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii is a toxin-producing species of cyanobacteria that in autumn 2003 was recorded for the first time in three shallow (max. depth ≤5 m) Waikato lakes and a hydro-electric dam on the Waikato River, New Zealand.

Combined Impact of Nanoplastics and Temperature on Green Algae: Implications for Growth, Lipid Content and Organic Exudates

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 6, December 2025.
The combined effects of nanoplastics and temperature on green algae were investigated. Higher NP concentration suppressed the temperature‐induced growth of the algae. Temperature plays a dominant role in influencing fatty acid composition and chemistry of AOM than exposure to NPs.

Migration of Net Phytoplankton and Zooplankton in Mendum’s Pond, New Hampshire [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The study examines the vertical distribution and migratory behavior of net phytoplankton and zooplankton of Mendum’s Pond in Barrington, N.H. The cyanobacteria, Microcystis and Aphanocapsa were the dominant net phytoplankton in this lake.
