Do aphid endosymbiotic bacteria influence parasitoid searching behaviour through changes in aphid honeydew production?

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Hamiltonella defensa infection increases honeydew production in certain aphid genotypes, potentially modifying aphid feeding behaviour. Parasitoid wasps, Aphidius ervi, are more attracted to honeydew from H. defensa‐infected aphids; though larger honeydew amounts may slightly deter searching.

Cape Gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.) Volatile Compounds Determination by Vacuum-Assisted Sorbent Extraction (VASE)—Selected Aspects

open access: yesMolecules
Vacuum-Assisted Sorbent Extraction (VASE) is a novel extraction technique that uses vacuum to facilitate the transfer of volatile compounds from the matrix to the sorbent. This technique was explored for extraction of volatiles from cape gooseberry fruit,

2-pentanone production from hexanoic acid by Penicillium roqueforti from blue cheese:is this the pathway used in humans? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Production of 2-pentanone, a methylketone, is increased in fasting ketotic humans. Its origin is unknown. We hypothesised that it is formed via β-oxidation of hexanoic acid by the peroxisomal pathway proposed for methylketone-producing fungi and yeasts ...

Rhizobia–Bean Symbiosis Increases Root Herbivore Attraction and Growth via Volatile Signals and Enhanced Nutrition

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The symbiosis between nitrogen‐fixing rhizobia and plants is considered mutually beneficial, yet its indirect effects on other organisms remain understudied. We examined how rhizobia symbiosis in Phaseolus vulgaris influences the behaviour and performance of Diabrotica balteata larvae. Specifically, we tested larval preference for nodulated (R+

Aboveground and Belowground Insect Herbivory Changes Maize‐Wireworm Interactions via Root Volatile Cues

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The rhizosphere harbours critical plant‐herbivore interactions often mediated by small lipophilic molecules (SLMs). Despite the agricultural importance of many soil‐dwelling insects, surprisingly little is known about chemically mediated belowground crop‐pest interactions. Root and shoot herbivores can influence these interactions by modifying

Microextraction of Polycyclic Musks from Surface Water with Deep-Eutectic-Solvent-Coated Membrane Followed by Gas-Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry Analysis

open access: yesChemosensors
Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), a novel class of eco-friendly solvents, are attracting considerable attention in extraction techniques. In this study, a hydrophobic DES, created by combining a quaternary ammonium salt and hexanoic acid, was coated onto a ...
