Comparing the accuracy of PCR-capillary electrophoresis and cuticle microhistological analysis for assessing diet composition in ungulates

open access: yes, 2019
The study of diet composition is required to understand the interactions between animal and plant ecosystems. Different non-invasive techniques applied on faecal samples have commonly been used for such purposes, with cuticle microhistological analysis (CMA) and emerging DNA-based methods being the most relevant.

The microhistological analysis quantifies the botanical composition of herbivore diets by the identification of the epidermal characters of ingested species. Many Papilionaceae form part of herbivore diets due to their high nutritive quality.

Obsessed with grasses?: The case of mara Dolichotis patagonum(Caviidae: Rodentia) ¿Obsesionada con gramíneas?: El caso de mara Dolichotis patagonum (Caviidae: Rodentia)

open access: yesRevista Chilena de Historia Natural, 2005
The diet of mara (Dolichotis patagonum, Zimmeraman 1780) within the limits of Sierra de las Quijadas National Park (San Luis, Argentina) is described. Other studies regarding mara’s diet showed that mara, feeds on different species of grasses and shrubs.
