Desktop micromilled microfluidics

Microfluidics and Nanofluidics, 2018
Micromilling is a proven method for prototyping microfluidic devices; however, high overhead costs, large machine footprints, an esoteric software stack, and nonstandard device bonding protocols may be hampering the widespread adoption of micromilling in the greater microfluidics community.

Analysis and simulation of size effects in micromilling

Production Engineering, 2009
In this paper the influence of a downscaling of the tool diameter and of the machining parameters on the milling process is analyzed. Starting with an analysis of the cutting edge radius of the tools, the influence of the downscaling on the process is determined by analyzing the surface quality and the cutting forces.

Analytical and Experimental Study of Electrochemical Micromilling

International Journal of Manufacturing, Materials, and Mechanical Engineering, 2015
Electrochemical micromachining (ECMM) is a non-conventional manufacturing method suitable for the production of microsized components on a wide range of conductive materials. ECMM improves dimensional accuracy and simplifies tool design for machining hard, high strength, heat resistant, and conductive materials into complex shapes.

Micromilling development and applications for microfabrication

Microelectronic Engineering, 1997
Abstract In conventional machining, milling is the most versatile of the cutting processes. Micromechanical milling has also been shown to be a very versatile and repid method for the removal of material and the creation of microstructures. These microstructures range form direct fabrication of molds in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) to direct ...

Pavement Preservation with Micromilling in Georgia

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2012
The micromilling technique to mill asphalt surface mix continues to be studied in the state of Georgia as part of a pavement preservation treatment in conjunction with thin asphalt overlays. Earlier research showed the results of micromilling on a deteriorated open-graded surface, which was overlaid with a new open-graded surface on I-75, south of ...

Force modelling in micromilling of channels

International Journal of Nanomanufacturing, 2015
The interest on micro cutting processes is proved by the attention of industries on this topic. This trend moves the researches on micro cutting toward different aspects. A modelling procedure for forecasting cutting forces in microcutting, considering all phenomena involved in micro scale, can be of interest for industries allowing the evaluation of ...

Micromilling strategies: Optimization issues

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2004
Micromilling is one of the technologies widely used to manufacture microstructures and tooling inserts for microinjection moulding and hot embossing. A number of manufacturing constraints remain that limit the application of this technology. One of these constraints is that the existing machining strategies are not appropriate for the manufacture of ...

Micromilling: Material microstructure effects

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2006
Micromilling is one of the technologies that is currently widely used for the production of microcomponents and tooling inserts. To improve the quality and surface finish of machined microstructures the factors affecting the process dynamic stability should be studied systematically.

MICROMILLING IN MINIMUM QUANTITY LUBRICATION

Machining Science and Technology, 2012
This study investigates micromilling of 316 L stainless steel under minimum quantity lubrication. A laser-based technique was developed to measure spindle runout and assist tool setting for fragile micro cutting tools. Thresholds were established to help select cutting parameters and avoid catastrophic tool failure.

Deformation of thin parts in micromilling

CIRP Annals, 2016
Abstract Deformation is one of the major problems in the micromilling of thin parts. Deformation of thin parts is mainly due to the machining induced residual stresses remained in the part and directly affects the dimensions and form tolerances of microparts.
