Individuals with persisting post‐concussion symptoms with physiological subtype demonstrate altered cardiovascular and autonomic responses to face cooling

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Individuals with persisting post‐concussion symptoms with physiological subtype (PPCS‐P) demonstrate exercise intolerance due to exacerbation of concussion‐like symptoms during incremental exercise. We tested the hypothesis that individuals with PPCS‐P (n = 12) would have a blunted cardiac autonomic response to face cooling compared to healthy

High-frequency ultrasound in guiding needle insertion for microneurography

open access: yes, 2015
The main purpose of our document is to add technical details to the procedure published in the study by Timothy B. Curry and Nisha Charkoudian (Curry and Charkoudian, 2011) focused on “the use of real-time ultrasound (US) in microneurography.” In the ...

Is resting muscle sympathetic nerve activity related to peripheral or cerebrovascular haemodynamics at high altitude? A retrospective analysis

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract High‐altitude hypoxia elicits several profound physiological responses, including substantial increases in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA); however, the association of this heightened MSNA with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular haemodynamics remains unclear in lowlanders and indigenous highlander populations.

Modeling foot sole cutaneous afferents: FootSim

open access: yesiScience, 2023
Summary: While walking and maintaining balance, humans rely on cutaneous feedback from the foot sole. Electrophysiological recordings reveal how this tactile feedback is represented in neural afferent populations, but obtaining them is difficult and ...

The acute and chronic effects of local aerobic exercise on cardiovascular physiology

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Exercise training has beneficial effects for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Effects of exercise training have typically been studied in the form of whole‐body exercise training, partly driven by the assumption that larger effects of exercise training can be achieved by involving more and larger muscle groups.

Pulmonary arterial mechanoreceptors mediate sustained sympathoexcitation during high altitude hypoxia in humans

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Sympathetic nervous system activation is a hallmark of high‐altitude hypoxia, yet the afferent mechanisms remain incompletely defined. We examined the relative contributions of pulmonary arterial mechanoreceptors and carotid chemoreceptors – two excitatory pathways co‐activated by hypoxia – to sustained sympathoexcitation at altitude.

Microneurography in rats: a minimally invasive method to record single C-fiber action potentials from peripheral nerves in vivo

open access: yes, 2010
Microneurography is a method suitable for recording intraneural single or multiunit action potentials in conscious subjects. Microneurography has rarely been applied to animal experiments, where more invasive methods, like the teased fiber recording ...

Neuropathic Itch: Routes to Clinical Diagnosis

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine, 2021
Neuropathic itch occurs due to damage of neurons of the peripheral or central nervous system. Several entities, including metabolic, neurodegenerative, orthopedic, infectious, autoimmune, malignant, and iatrogenic conditions, may affect the somatosensory

Age‐related loss of hysteresis in the spontaneous vascular sympathetic baroreflex is associated with altered neural rather than mechanical control

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract The vascular sympathetic baroreflex is critical for stabilising blood pressure. A notable feature of this reflex is hysteresis, a directional asymmetry in responsiveness during rising versus falling pressure that is evident in young adults but attenuated in older age.
