Roughness Encoding in Human and Biomimetic Artificial Touch: Spatiotemporal Frequency Modulation and Structural Anisotropy of Fingerprints

open access: yesSensors, 2011
The influence of fingerprints and their curvature in tactile sensing performance is investigated by comparative analysis of different design parameters in a biomimetic artificial fingertip, having straight or curved fingerprints.

The ‘lactate paradox’ revisited after 35 years: In memoriam Paolo Cerretelli

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Some decades ago significant scientific interest was raised by the concept of the ‘lactate paradox’ occurring during altitude acclimatization. In short, in acute hypoxia blood lactate− concentration ([La]b) is higher, compared to normoxia, at any given submaximal work rate, whereas peak [La]b at exhausting exercise is unchanged.

Microneurography and sympathetic nerve activity: A decade-by-decade journey across 50 years

open access: yes, 2019
© 2019 the American Physiological Society. The technique of microneurography has advanced the field of neuroscience for the past 50 years. While there have been a number of reviews on microneurography, this paper takes an objective approach to exploring ...

Assessing the Sympatholytic Effects of SGLT2 Inhibitors in Anuric Haemodialysis Patients Using Microneurography: Study Protocol for a Mechanistic Proof-of-Concept Trial

open access: yesKidney & Blood Pressure Research
Introduction: Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) have been shown to provide effective cardiorenal protection, reducing mortality in conditions such as heart failure and chronic kidney disease.

Effects of long term device-guided slow breathing on sympathetic nervous activity in hypertensive patients: a randomized open-label clinical trial

open access: yesBlood Pressure, 2017
Purpose: Device-guided slow breathing (DGB) is indicated as nonpharmacological treatment for hypertension. The sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) reduction may be one of the mechanisms involved in blood pressure (BP) decrease.

Increases in muscle sympathetic nerve activity, heart rate, respiration and skin blood flow during passive viewing of exercise

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2013
The cardiovascular and respiratory effects of exercise have been widely studied, as have the autonomic effects of imagined and observed exercise. However, the effects of observed exercise in the first person have not been documented, nor have direct ...

Pulmonary arterial mechanoreceptors modulate exercise‐induced sympathetic activation in healthy humans during moderate‐intensity hypoxic exercise

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend This randomized cross‐over trial (N = 12) addressed the hypothesis that selective reduction of pulmonary arterial pressure (i.e. manipulation of pulmonary arterial mechanoreceptor activation) during hypoxic exercise would reduce sympathetic outflow (muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA)) in healthy humans.

The Impact of a 12-week High-Intensity Interval Training Program on Sympathetic Transduction in Healthy Adults: A Pilot Project.

open access: yes, 2022
Peak pressor responses (i.e., sympathetic transduction) following bursts of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) are inversely related to peak oxygen consumption (V̇O2peak) in younger males, but not females.
