The microphysics of collisionless shock waves [PDF]

open access: yesReports on Progress in Physics, 2016
Collisionless shocks, that is shocks mediated by electromagnetic processes, are customary in space physics and in astrophysics. They are to be found in a great variety of objects and environments: magnetospheric and heliospheric shocks, supernova remnants, pulsar winds and their nebulæ, active galactic nuclei, gamma-ray bursts and clusters of galaxies ...

The role of mesoscale weather effects in simulating pyroconvection: A case study of the Santa Coloma de Queralt wildfire

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This large‐eddy simulation study on pyroconvection shows that the added value from resolving the mesoscale explicitly is found in the timing of pyrocumulus formation and circulation changes. The circulation of the convective plume itself is not substantially different between the simulations. Abstract Extreme wildfire events are characterised by strong

Global Microphysical Sensitivity of Superparameterized Precipitation Extremes

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, 2021
A recent study found statistically significant differences in extreme precipitation distributions over the contiguous United States (CONUS) when changing the microphysics scheme in a superparameterized global climate model.

Numerical simulation and physical understanding of a locally initiated sea fog event over the eastern Yellow Sea with a transition of air–sea temperature difference

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Unexpected sea fog in the west coast of South Korea had a huge impact on the transportations in the Seoul–Incheon metropolitan area. We reproduced successfully the formation and evolution of a sea event with a transition of air–sea temperature difference using the Weather Research and Forecasting model.

Machine Learning the Warm Rain Process

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2021
Clouds are critical for weather and climate prediction. The multiple scales of cloud processes make simulation difficult. Often models and measurements are used to develop empirical relationships for large‐scale models to be computationally efficient ...

The role of the synoptic‐scale conditions in driving fog and mist during the FATIMA July 2022 Sable Island Field program

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
ERA5 hourly 325‐m and 1512‐m (a) convergence and (b) vertical motion (actually pressure change with sign reversed to compare with convergence) over Sable Island around the time of an event. The mist (green) and fog (red) occurrences at the surface station are shown at the bottom of the figures. A 325‐m fitted line convergence was positive for the first

In Situ Measurements of Cirrus Clouds on a Global Scale

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2020
Observations of high-altitude cirrus clouds are reported from measurements made during the routine monitoring of cloud properties on commercial aircraft as part of the In-Service Aircraft for a Global Observing System.

Analysis of the fractional scattering contribution in the forward peak for multicomponent systems

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Derivation and justification of mixing rules for multicomponent systems. A novel formulation of the delta‐Eddington scaling rule. Analytical guidance for comparing radiative transfer results. Abstract The widely used δ‐Eddington approximation improves the accuracy of radiative transfer calculations by representing the fraction of scattering into the ...

Rare Lightning and Convection Characteristics During Two Successive Tornadoes in Southern China

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Systematic investigations into lightning characteristics of tornado storms in China remain scarce. This study comprehensively analyses rare lightning behaviour and overshooting top characteristics for two successive tornadoes during a long‐lived supercell in southern China on 27 April 2024.

Topics in Microphysics of Relativistic Plasmas [PDF]

open access: yesSpace Science Reviews, 2013
Astrophysical plasmas can have parameters vastly different from the more studied laboratory and space plasmas. In particular, the magnetic fields can be the dominant component of the plasma, with energy-density exceeding the particle rest-mass energy density.
