The size of bacteria, as measured by interference microscopy

Journal of the Royal Microscopical Society, 1965
SYNOPSISBacteria were examined with a Smith interference microscope using a half‐shade eyepiece and photomicrographs of their images were prepared. Microdensitometer traces on the negatives demonstrated conclusively that the method developed by Ross in 1957 to measure the thickness of bacteria was subject to systematic error.

Scanning quantitative shear interference microscopy

Optics Letters
Quantitative phase microscopy (QPM) has become a widely used technique for in situ analysis of transparent specimens via phase recovery. However, traditional wide-field QPM suffers from reduced contrast and artifact generation due to spatial crosstalk.

Quantitative Interference Microscopy

1991
In any microscope, the formation of an image depends on the interference of light: according to Abbe’s theory, the image results from the interference of direct and diffracted light in the image plane. Most modern microscopes used in cell biology incorporate devices that exploit interference in the image plane for revealing phase differences introduced

Interference Microscopy of Polymers

1989
There is a sense in which every light microscope can be seen as an interference microscope. This view has been discussed by Hartley1 who makes a clear distinction between ‘conventional’ and interference instruments on the basis of whether or not it is possible to adjust the phase difference between interfering beams in a controlled manner.

Interference Microscopy and Histology

1964
This meeting will take the form of an informal panel discussion of important theoretical and practical problems in interference microscopy. It is now a little over ten years since interference microscopy was introduced as a quantitative cytological method for mass determination.
